Usyk being the ultimate victor and eventual heavyweight challenger seems to be a foregone conclusion of many. However, what if Gassiev flips the script, KOs Usyk then challenges Wilder? I say Gassiev may actually have a better chance vs Wilder than Usyk. Gassiev showed some impressive classic defensive skills vs Dorticos, a noted KO artist, and Gassiev's punch has more power than Usyk's so Gassiev would be a real threat to Wilder.
Gassiev would KO him even worse than Evgeny Romanov did . Wilder couldn't be defensive and patient waiting for his opponent to tire like he does, because Gassiev is always on the attack, he would close the gap and KO him. Wilder would have to engage in a shootout early to have a chance and Gassiev has the stronger punch resistance and mental toughness.
Gassiev doesn't have to beat Usyk to land a big fight at heavyweight straight away. Both of the WBSS finalists (at cruiser anyway) have raised their profile exponentially, and both would be the A-side versus all but the 4 top names in the HW division.
Oh and I would give the Abel-ized Gassiev, weighing in the neighborhood of 200lbs (give or take a few) a very good crack at flattening Wilder.
Gassiev is too slow, too predictable, and needs more experience. I'm also not sold on his stamina just yet. He has good power and bodywork, but took too long with Dorticos, who is feather fisted and has a weak chin. Lebdev was a much better opponent than Dorticos and he showed Gassiev struggles with handspeed and well timed shots. Gassiev also doesn't move his head, which will make him an easy target for Wilder's straight right hands.
Gassiev already beat a smaller but technically better Wilder in Dorticos. He's still young but would already have a good chance of beating Wilder, give him a few years and he has 100 percent chance of winning.
I don't think Dorticos is a feather-fist, nor would I say his chin is weaker than Wilder's. Lebedev has better timing & speed than Wilder. He also doesn't remain static, his neck perhaps, but he does move his upper body to slip punches, and is an expert with hand-blocking (go pick any round at random and count how many he parries & picks off vs. Dorticos), I think he'd be okay, especially with Sánchez in his corner, they're not just going to blunder in with no plan for Wilder.
I'd like Gassievs chances better than Uysk. Hed still be an underdog, but at least has the power to hurt Wilder. But, if that fight ever happened, Gassiev would suddenly become shot or too small, and it would be called a cherry pick. The people who can't give him props for Ortiz certainly won't start with Gassiev.
Ever heard of Ali Raymi? You can run up a fake padded stoppage-heavy record in this sport. He could just be ignorant about Dorticos and/or his opposition.
