Had a small argument on here yesterday regarding gate keepers here is a few for thought :

    HW - Ruiz , Valuev
    CW - ??? unsure
    LHW - Glen Johnson
    SMW - Andrade
MW - Winky (maybe a little harsh)
    JrMW - Cintron
    WW - Collazo
JrWW - Hatton (kills me to say but facts are facts)
LW - David Diaz , Barrera (maybe)
    SPFW - Martinez
FW - Juarez , De Leon

Now , i know there is some good fighters in that list but thats my point , good fighters / gate keepers for real contenders or up and coming world class fighters is what i class as a gate keeper !!!!!!!

Im sure people will have a different view so lets dance ............

Hatton is still better than that...... for now. I'd put Malignaggi there before I put Hatton there. I think he is a little better than that too.

Agreed. Hatton schooled Malignaggi one fight ago. Until someone who isn't P4P number one beats him, then he has to be considered one of the top fighters in the division.

That's a horrible list. I don't see how you can call valuev the gatekeeper of the hw division. That's monte barrets job

Ruiz and Valuev aren't gatekeepers - they should be, but they aren't. Ruiz is still a contender, and I guess he will remain a contender until he finally retires. He'll get a shot at the WBA strap next year. As for Valuev, he was a beltholder only a couple months ago, and you can bet your house that he will get another title shot in 2010 or 2011 - either for the WBA belt, or with a Klitschko (unless he really ****s up in his next bout).

The OP's list is not a good "gate keeper" list. I say this regularly, but in my opinion, a gate keeper is a guy like Grady Brewer. Grady will beat 7 shades of **** out of an average journeyman, and if you put your "prospect" in with Grady, unless he's the real deal, B.B. will whip your boy's ass. However, Grady Brewer has never been, and will never be, a top contender.

Ruiz & Valuev are still contenders given how poor the division is. Valuev was a beltholder and only just lost the title, and Ruiz is fighting Haye for it so how are they 'gatekeepers'?

Andrade and Winky it's tough to say, given the recent peformances and results, they have both been taken down a notch, but both are still good fighters.

Hatton I'm not sure at this moment. He's done, but has he been relegated for 'gatekeeper' status? Seeing as he might fight Marquez, I don't think so yet.

Martinez is a world-title holder. Hardly a gatekeeper.

HW - Sherman Williams, Robert Hawkins, Jameel McCline, Monte Barrett, Demetrice King
CW - Ismail Abdoul, Jose Luis Herrera, Michael Simms
    LHW - Epifanio Mendoza,
SMW - Ted Muller, Sergey Tatevosyan, David Gogiya
MW - Darnell Boone, Ishe Smith
LMW - Archak Termeliksetian, Andrey Tsurkan, Ossie Duran, Grady Brewer
    WW - Cosme Rivera
    JWW - Ben Tackie
LW - Fernando Angulo, Ivan Valle, Carlos Urias, Aldo Valtierra
    SFW - Francisco Lorenzo
    FW - Miguel Roman
SBW - Rogers Mtagwa, Genaro Garcia
    BW - Cecilio Santos
    SFlW - Everado Morales
FlW - Wandee Singwancha, Gilberto Keb Baas
    JFlW - Sonny Boy Jaro,
    MW - Muhammad Rachman

IMO, there are different gatekeepers for different levels. some of these guys are high level gatekeepers (i.e., only a true contender should be able to beat them), while others are lower level gatekeepers (serious prospects should get past them, but mediocre ones might lose), and a few are really just chincheckers (they won't get knocked out, and they can knock you out if your chin is no good, but they should be easy to outbox).

    thats a good list.

Cliff Couser could be added as well as Marion Wilson was a good gatekeeper during the 90's

That guy has literally fought every body...

    Golota
    Briggs
    Mavrovic
    J. Thunder
    Kirk Johnson
    Mercer
    Ibeasbuchhi
    Sanders
    Maskaev
    Donald
    Rahman
    Peter
    Norris
    Botha
    Tony Thompson
    McCall

All these fighters have at one point or another been a champion, or at the least a #1 contender.

and to top it off, he has only been KO'd ONCE, and it wasn';t by neither of these guys mentioned above. Thats your perfect example of a gatekeeper.

Abdoul was a great choice as well. Real good example of a gatekeeper for the 175/200 limit.

    Wlodarczyk
    Kraj
    Haye
    Adamek
    Enzo Mac
    Rudiger May
    Fragomeni
    Kostecki
