That wasn't Gatti, any more than the guy Clottey knocked down and dominated in 2007 was Chico.

    This.

That was merely the remains of Gatti. Prime Gatti would've massacred Gomez.

Why does this surprise you? Every fighter when they're past prime takes a beating. Look at Ray Leonard, Ali, etc.. It's just how it goes.

Yep. And past-prime ATG's galore have taken those licks from far lesser ilk than Gomez.

I don't know why it was a suprise. Gatti was well and truly done at this stage and was coming off a war against Baldomir, which he lost. At the time it was planned as his swan song but Gomez is no mug and just had too much for the shell of a faded fan favourite.

Knowing Gomez, Gatti would have made it a good fight. I think Gatti would have won, but the styles would have clashed to create an amazing fight.

Fair enough assumption, but I figure a prime Gatti would've ended it emphatically at least.

I'm pretty sure it was Chico. The difference being the other guy wasn't at a ridiculous size disadvantage like most of Chico's opponents at SFW. The only reason Corrales wasn't knocked out by Clottey is because he did his spit the mouth piece trick a couple of times.

Come on. You know Corrales was no welterweight, even if he was big for the divisions he campaigned in (whereas Clottey is quite a big welterweight). Besides, he was pretty clearly ragged from all the wars by that point. It's not a very meaningful win for Clottey.

  14. Gatti was done, should have retired after the ward fight's , he took too many shots bad beatings ., Gomez cleaned his clock.

What's funny is that you had people at the time blaming novice head trainer Micky Ward for the loss. :patsch

Ward may or may not have the chops to coach at a high level (some retired boxers do and some don't) but it could have been Eddie ****ing Futch at that point...Gatti was done.

Gomez wrecked him, and honestly Nito freaking Bravo would have had a chance to beat him by then.
