Being a Gomez fan, I'll just state that Gatti probably would have had problems with Gomez at any stage of his career, imo. The main reason is not so much that Gomez has a good bit more boxing skill than Gatti(which he does), but that Gatti was just not big enough for a solid fighter at 147. He didn't hit Gomez much during their fight, but in the last round while taking shots he caught Gomez with a haymaker left hook, and Gomez walked through it and you could literally see the shock in Gatti's eyes. Same with Baldomir the year before, who he hit far more often. Power is the last thing to go for a fighter and those punches certainly looked strong, but Gatti was a huge weight drainer throughout his career(not saying it's a negative, there are risks to doing it both ways) and so he basically outweighed most of his opposition throughout his career on fight night. It just wasn't the same at Welterweight fighting against guys his size on fight night or larger. They should have much him up against a cautious boxer with a weak chin to bomb out of there, not an iron-chinned guy that throws a lot of punches who they thought Gatti could outbox. If you could take Gatti's power, you would give him hell because his defense just wasn't good and his desire to trade would always come through. So I don't think that Gatti would have ever fared well in the matchup.
The Gatti from the Oscar fight would have beat Gomez. I didn't think he looked that bad in the Oscar fight, he was just clearly overmatched
how many stitches did Gotti end up getting for that split lip? Anyone know? P.S. Money ruined Gotti and handed Gomes his leftovers.
oh cmon. Chico still had some in tank when he fought Clottey even outworked him in a couple of rounds and as sad as his chin is he was still able to last the distance against someone who was a light HWY that night. Gatti on the other hand was just completely shot against Gomez. Better comparison would be the JLC that lost to Gomez.
Oscar spent half that fight practicing the shoulder roll with his hands down in front of Gatti because Floyd Sr had just taken over as his trainer and tried to put that in Oscar's game, and Oscar felt no threat from Gatti. Every time DLH opened up on Gatti he hurt him, he could have gotten him out of there within two rounds if he'd wanted. Gatti was not going to beat a fringe world class Welter with a decent chin, at any stage of his career.
