Pick the dweebs out of ESB who actually get offended this kid has an opinion lol. Hey I think Hearns vs Hagler is overrated. The 1st round was awesome, the rest of the fight was Hagler stalking an injured fighter for the kill. 1st Gatti-Ward fight was outstanding. Perhaps the greatest round I've ever seen. 2 was ok, one sided. 3 a great fight not legendary.
Agreed. The first fight was awesome. The second fight was okay. The third fight was good. It was also a rather one-sided trilogy. Gatti won about 22-24 rounds of the 30. The second fight was a 10-0 shutout, maybe 9-1. Ward won 2 rounds in the last bout, one when Gatti broke his hand, and the other when he scored a KD after losing the first 2:55 of the round. The third bout was good, the 2nd best of the trilogy, but that wouldn't make a top 5 list of exciting fights for either Gatti nor Ward. And giving it Fight of the Year for 2003 over Gomez-Arthur and Toney-Jirov was some bull****.
One of my fav moments in all of boxing happens in the second fight, when Ward gets blasted by a Gatti powershot and gets sent into the corner.... but gets up, tough as nails, and starts fighting Gatti with his backs against the ropes and having obvious balance problems, then he kinda is prompting Gatti to hit him, waits, Gatti is being patient, and then Ward decides that he will unleash then. Epic moment for me personally.
Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward fights were good fights but a bit overrated 1 being the best 2 did not live up to the hype 3 was a little better so yes. A bit overrated
Nice post. I agree, this was the trilogy that demonstrated that you don't have to be great fighters to have a great fight.
I've been watching boxing since the early 70s and I've still never seen anything like Round 9. To this day, every time I watch it I get chill bumps.
Thanks, glad to see others can see past the lack of elite level ability, and focus on the other intangibles that ended up on display.
The first fight was sensational. The second was entertaining considering it was so one-sided. The third was excellent. As far as skill and technical ability, none of the fights were great .... but who cares? They were the kind of fights that tapped into that caveman dna we still have. Forget great timing, a well-executed jab and wonderful defence - sometimes there's nothing better than two guys beating the life out of each other. Boxing wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for guys like this.
