Thanks for the invite. I have been spending more time there lately and love it, although my knowledge base for older fighters isn't strong enough sometimes to make much of an impact there. Until recently boxers of the last ten or fifteen years were my forte.
I cant believe the bullsht coming from some people, no welter beats Gavilan of today's crop, that's not nolstagia, that's common sense
Thats my feeling as well. The welters of the late 90's would have a better shot IMO. Pugilisticpower just sees it differently, which is fine because I can verify that he has seen the footage and thats all that you can ask for. What irritates me more are the teenagers here who haven't seen footage and just go off about Floyd being the greatest welter ever...
Gavilan's not as good as Guzman, seriously.:good And you guys need to learn to ignore blatant idiocy.
Guzman shouldn't even be placed in the same vicinity as Gavilan, unless you are alphabetizing your boxing collection.
I disagree, Guzman was robbed of the oppurtunity to school the best around for many years and is now steadily declining, but still impressive. When he schools Pac, JMM and everybody at 135, will you retract that he doesn't deserve to be the same vicinity?
Funny guy! Are you joking though? I like Guzman's silky skills, but KID GAVILAN is a top 6 elite ww in the division's very rich history imo. You cant compare these guys yet
Yea , late 90s most probably more so, but i rate Gavilan (on his beat day) as one of the very finest welters ever, hard to overcome, even for a great like Trinidad, and Oscar would just be outdone, Oscar is a very poor man's Gavilan imo
Out of curiosity, who do you take against him h2h at welter? And on a completely unrelated note, do you happen to know what Duran is doing these days? If he lives in Panama, or has a gym there? I will be in Panama fairly soon and would love to interview him... I have heard he is an accesable guy to the public.
You fail to take into account the opposition he was in with. Bratton would have blocked or slipped a Jones leaping left hook and countered it. You need to watch Bratton and Gavilan in against lesser opposition, like most of Jones career, and see what they could do.
Bollocks... Which one of today's fighters can quickly switch up to a right hand lead - left uppercut... or even put together a double left uppercut, let alone a right uppercut bolo and turn it over into a short right cross??? Do you even notice the step back... step back... then pull the head back without the step back and counter to catch opponent lungning in? Mayweather's the only fighter that executes that kinda **** today. He would mix it ferociously with vicious punchers... and push them back in exchanges. He could dance and counter brilliantly. When he utilised his jab, it was up there with Hearns'. Gavilan's resume would be the equivalent of fighting Margarito, Cotto, Hatton, Mayweather, Williams, Cintron, DLH, Mosley... all in the same year! Of course there's gonna be a couple of sub-par performances and losses! The guy was an all-time great, and on his best nights, a top 5 welterweight...
Hmm.. that punch is still used (the way to throw it) by many Cuban amateurs.. maybe not EXACTLY the same, but it's a very effective and hard punch. And great to throw when someone's backing up (on the ropes) for example. I recommend taking a look at Hernandez in '96 Atlanta. Duvergel was also quite good with such a kind of punch. PS.: Thanks for posting this great vid acb.. wow.
I don't like arguing era for era because this is the usual shitpit argument that happens. Only thing you can do is view their successes vs their failures. On an achievement standing, it's easier to say the guys back in the earlier days fought tougher competition, but realistically, look at how many can's fought in that era. And the shocking thing? Some of those cans beat these guys. Ross Purrity beating Wlad was the closest I can think of that scenario happening these days.
Which brings me to the reason Marciano is so famed. He was one of the few in that generation that never lost a fight. Doesn't matter that out of the 49 people he beat, he probably only beat 2 great fighters and about 8 "OK" fighters.. he's often put up there in the Top 2 or 3 ATG HW's Give Marciano to Tyson, what do you think would happen? Hell, give Marciano to Tua, what would happen?
