http://www.setantasports.com/en/Spo...ght/?facets/sport-space/great-britain-locale/ WBA light welterweight champion Gavin Rees told setantasports.com that a move down to lightweight to fight Amir Khan could be on the cards in the future, after he defends his title against Andreas Kotelnik on March 22 bout and then meets, and defeats, Ricky Hatton. Having only lost a narrow points decision to Junior Witter and a split decision to Souleymane M'Baye - who he also drew with when challenging for the same title a year ago - Kotelnik certainly poses a significant threat to Rees, but not enough to concern him. The 27-year-old fighter insists he is not about to study his style ahead of the fight, instead he plans to concentrate on what he plans to do. "He drew against Souleymane. Who I beat to win the title, that's all I know about him," Rees told setantasports.com. "You see how many knockouts M'Baye had and I took his shots fine on the chin. It didn't really matter that I hadn't done the 12 rounds before and worked at a pretty good pace all the way through. "After this fight, hopefully I'll get a big fight against Junior Witter or Ricky Hatton. They're both big names in Britain and the world so either of them will do." Calzaghe has previously told setantasports.com that he would much rather see Rees fight Hatton than Witter because of the financial rewards that would come from it - and the 27-year-old is happy to go along with this. "He [Enzo Calzaghe] thinks of the money. Hatton is the best and I want to fight the best and I am the champion - so why wouldnt he want to fight me? "It'd be a toe-to-toe fight. Both coming forward, both take a good shot. A good fight and a big fight. But I'd win definitely. Rees admits that he is really still a lightweight and sees another lucrative fight down the line with Olympic Silver medallist Amir Khan. "I could probably still get down to lightweight but I'm not about to give up my title," Rees added. "If I step down to lightweight obviously a big fight for me would be Amir Khan. We could do a deal with him I'm sure. He's a good kid, but I feel I'd be too strong for him. "He's had hand-picked opponents, people who can't knock him out, but if I landed I'd knock him out at lightweight."
It will interesting to see if Rees performs well enough in his next fight to warrent a fight with Ricky.
Rees is a gutsy little fighter. He's of that Calzaghe gym mould where he'll stand there and trade when he shouldn't. The sparring sessions between him and Bradley Pryce are the stuff of legend around Newbridge. Apparently they go at each other for sessions on end. Unfortunately, Rees' height is going to hamper him considerably against world level operators who aren't half as lazy as M'Baye. Witter would do an absolute number on Rees.
This sums up my feelings exactly. Damn funny comment too, Gaz. I'm bored of Rees already, he is totally unconvincing and for sure he'd lose badly to Hatton and Witter. Who is this dwarf trying to kid?
I have more chance of shagging Angelina Jolie. I like Rees though, but his skills are nowehere near good enough to beat Hatton or Khan.
Rees is hoping someone actually notices him.. Hey look ..... I have a world title too... ha ha ha ha please give me some attention....
Cheers but I can't claim credit, its an old Bill Shankly quote about watching Everton...good though eh?:good
Hold on a second here guys, Rees has beaten the WBA champion in Mbaye fair and square in the ring. Whether he deserved his shot initially is neither here nor there now, he's the champ. He deserves as much respect as the next guy. He holds a decent belt and has something to prove. I know that most people who have posted on this thread have probably seen Rees fight once at the most, give the kid a break.
I can't blame Rees for bigging himself up and trying to get a payday but damn it's about time someone pulled him to one side and just said "sorry to break it to you, but you're actually not very good - watch your own fights, you'll see" Reminds me of those golfers that think they swing all smooth like Tom Watson, when in reality they look like a thunderbirds puppet.
