That link with Benavidez in his 3rd fight, the opponent doesnt look like the typical British journeyman and i feel that is why the USA/Mexico are way better at the elite level. That Hill opponent came to win.
Bunce is spot on. Far more American hype jobs about. As it stands Frankie has made a more credible progression to date. Huge shame though he wasn't at the Olympics, would have been good to see.
I do not aggree that he has made a more credible progression to date. The opponent in Benavidez 3rd pro fight is better than anyone Gavin has fought IMO.
I can see both sides of the argument. The difference across the pond is that the opponents always come to win. Warren isn't the worst offender for this granted, but so many of our lads are fed flat out bums that don't even want to throw a punch. Steve has said this many times himself btw. Being taken six or eight rounds by a genuine hardcase that is trying to knock your head off and giving you a working over is better than facing a Eurobum or a low level domestic journeyman that probably shouldn't have a licence to box anymore. I know these blokes are only trying to earn a living, but there shouldn't really be a moral victory in taking people the distance. What is the point in competing if you aren't trying to win?
good post and the people who suffer in the long run are the "prospects" becuase they are just not prepared for a real tough fighter coming at them.
Mitchell vs Katsidis being the most recent example. 31-0 but only Johanneson had any form - which included a one sided KO loss to Leva. Most of the others were on a run of KO losses or had never fought anyone good.
Benevidez is building a 15-0 record before the steps up. Top Rank do it with all there prospects and there the best in the business at building fighters.
Tischenko and Valentino, who Frankie beat on the way to the Worlds Ams (which Jose '2nd Coming of Ray Robinson' Benavidez didnt win) were far superior to any of the fighters Jose's fought in ams/pro game. Can say Frankie Gomez but as mentioned Gomez beat him on multiple occasions (thought it was 3 but am willing to accept LP's earlier post) Im being hard on the U.S kid he can fight and with his natural size and good skills can be a multi-weight success but its not a given as some would try to make us believe. He's getting the right sparring and he's far better off with Top Rank who can build star fighters rather than GB who are 0-shitload in creating prospects (hence buying them after others do the hard work) Same with Frankie, im sure he'd be the first to admit just coz his amateur records fantastic its a given that he'll be a massive star in the pro's, the game doesnt work like that. Great talent, awesome potential and as ive posted previously i think he'l be huge but it aint a cert. On topic, Gavin lands the more eye catching stuff, plenty of counter opportunities for a clear points win. Too clever, too skilled
Yeah, not this one. The guy hardly has a defence, poor footwork, throws about 20 punches a round in a scheduled 4 rounder, throws wild overhand rights. He doesn't even have a jab FFS! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVgRy1-9ruU[/ame]
Maidana could get Khan more money than Malignaggi? :rofl No. Maidana's last fight was a ghost town. No one was there to see it where Khan-Malignaggi fight did just as much as Marquez-Diaz did on the gate.
