That's certainly one way to one-up Top Rank. Put Canelo in the ring against a B-level boxer on the CBS network. Bob Arum thought he was getting the last laugh for the Sept.15 date... not so fast.
Okay I was gonna come in start a new thread about this... Key points from his quotes are that only one of 3 opponents they are considering are PPV Worthy, key word being if they are able to secure this one opponent it would be a Very Very VERY big PPV being his exact quotes... That only Points to Cotto. For the Big PPV event.... The next 2 are Probably Trout and Lara, which would not be PPV worthy so they will be Headlining SHOWTIME, or will for the first time head over to PRIME time CBS where people will get to fall in Love with Canelo how Tyson was able to win over the hearts of millions... Now lets see what happens IMO GBP is gonna do all they can to secure Cotto even though Cotto was quoted saying he does not want to fight in the fall with Canelo.. Maybe GBP can throw a huge Guarantee, and Upside of the PPV to lure him in... If not we are probably getting Lara/Trout.
Man this is great for the sport, especially if they put him in the biggest test of his career(Trout or Lara)
Trout or Quintana .. They'll try to build up a ppv with Lara in the future. But Lara is way too much risk low regard. I've come to understand this from a business point of view. It's unfair but is business.
i would prefer the non PPV option even if it's not as stiff a test for Canelo to get boxing back on a major network, that'd be amazing.....K-9 vs Spinks winner/Trout/ Quintana. I'd rather see Canelo vs Cotto but if it means PPV vs CBS i'd rather see him vs any of the other guys on CBS as it's much better for the sport! Shame Lara won't be considered. Lara= the real deal at 154 but I get why GBP don't wanna match him with Canelo for the risk/reward factor of fighting a slick dangerous unknown.
They should move the date. It's bad for boxing. It's bad for the Fighters who are trying to earn a living. They should all be working together instead of competing with one another. Unless, their fight comes on much earlier than the other which would make for a great night of boxing for TV viewers...but not fans that want to go to the fight. Change the date. Overall, I still like GBP over Top Rank...but those two need to work it out.
I never thought of Quintana but it makes sense. Mexico vs PR with a high liklihood of a ko for Alvarez on free tv would cut into the Top Rank card
