Barrera is scrappy but his come forward style is made to order for Gómez's check hooks.

Barrera down in the seventh, but a very tricky call. Gómez landed a flush left hook on the jaw in an exchange but their heads also happened to come together (hard) at that exact moment. Barrera crumpling easily could have been attributable to either (or the cumulative effect of both).

 

Both landing nasty body shots. Barrera spearing in low jabs and then bringing them high, while Gómez circles and throws pot shot counter jabs and single lead rights. Aesthetically pleasing clash of styles.

 

Gómez is, along with Tevin Farmer, among the best young practitioners of the American style of pure boxing at its best (defense oriented, but neither to a fault and erring on the side of dull like Cory Spinks, nor all just parlor tricks for show and functionally ineffective like Adrien Broner, who never was that slick and got by on pure athleticism for the most part; lots of pot shot counters and single leads, and judiciously well-timed and executed combinations strewn in at unexpected intervals)

That said, he instinctivelygoes to war a little to often - which is to his credit, as it makes him more entertaining than a PBF or Spinks, but also means guys he should be shutting out in a pristine match can drag him into the gutter.

 

Barrera, with his knack for relentless pressure and standing 5'10" with 78½″ reach, has all the ostensible tools needed to be the latter day Antonio Margarito and be a tough out for the entire 147lb roster, but for lack of being a little heavier-handed and not having that superhuman engine.

You could also complain that his chin falls short of Tony's, but a) Spence dropped & kayoed him with body shots (after chucking everything but the kitchen sink at his face) and b) Tony's was a little overrated.
