Damn, some vicious combos from López connecting after playing octopus & then matador by turn. Not going to get the kayo, though, I suspect, in the remaining ninety seconds...

González tries shaming López into standing in the pocket and slugging with him for the last minute. No such luck. Ooh, massive right hand with 18 seconds left - but still not gonna do it. López is running now. Disappointing, as Bernardo Osuna points out. Missed opportunity to close the show (for only marginal risk) in front of the fans @ home.

Lopez getting flack for holding back, but given that he got bounced off the mat by Casteneda several times after dropping and hurting him, I don't blame him. Props to Wonder Boy for showing some discipline.

    Cards seem a tad wide...

I'm not sure he swept even the seven I saw, making 99-91 look very improbable.

El Fenómeno has so far thrice had skids of exactly two losses each (Cornelius Lock & Daniel Ponce de León in 2009/10; Orlando Salido & Gamalier Rodríguez in 2013/14; and most recently Terry Flanagan & José López - yes the same one from the co-main event - in 2016/17), so if the pattern holds then he's due to embark upon a streak of at least a few victories (until his next consecutive pair of defeats). :deal:

Neither man is top 15 in any major world sanctioning org:

(Cruz has formerly been top 15 in more than one)

Roach is WBC #26 at super feather.

Bernard Hopkins goes through a long and convoluted walk-back after putting his foot in his mouth and claiming each man is looking to use the other to springboard directly into a world title opportunity (and then perhaps realizing, or being nudged & prompted by an ESPN statistician providing the above data, that neither is currently in that kind of position to be one victory away from even an eliminator)

    Round 1

Roach is hesitant, rowing out a few left jabs softly into the guard of the more diminutive southpaw, checked & parried off Cruz's right forearm & wrist. Roach dropping in a few right hands, caught on the left glove & horizontally folded arm. Cruz is sawing up top with the busy right jab, and darting in with quick lefts on the forehead after taking a few lateral steps to lull Roach to sleep.

10-9 Cruz, not much in that.

    Round 2

Roach is throwing his jab and/or the plunging right hand on the body, à la carte instead of combining them, giving the smaller veteran a lot of respect. Cruz is picking off jabs with the knuckle pads of his right glove and countering with quick lefts up top. Roach is starting to skip his right hand lead over the gloves of Cruz, slightly boosting his output. Roach is caught by a looping left as Cruz dashes in and sashays off to one side, keeping himself a low target. Roach finds him, well-timed right, shaking up Cruz, who smirks and gives a repudiating shake.

10-9 Roach, close, basically stole it with that single heavy blow just before the bell.

    19-19

Cruz's punch resistance must be shot if right hands from the feather-fist Roach are bothering him. Too much wear & tear over the years.

    Round 3

Roach is walking Cruz down and pump-faking the jab, leading instead with long right hands skimming across the close-cropped faux-hawk or step-through left hooks. Cruz is blocking most of Roach's offense but getting knocked physically across the ring by their compulsive force. Some are grazing the head and he seems very wary despite having been less squirrely with bigger punchers in the past.. Cruz is very nervously twitching out a right jab or feinting it and floating to his left, keeping his distance where he can.

    10-9 Roach

    29-28 Roach

    Round 4

Roach is slowing down his pressure as Cruz starts to hold some more of his ground, popping 1-2-2s pivoting around the ring-center Tecate logo, hitting Roach with both left crosses after sinking a throwaway right jab into his palm as the American remains squared up standing on the stylized eagle. Virtually no punches from Roach for entire half-minute stretches. Cruz isn't setting the world afire, either, but he's flashing hand speed with his jab and grazing a quieted Roach with the odd left.

    10-9 Cruz

    38-38
