First of all, would I prefer for Mayweather to fight Marquez at 140 like many others? Yes, it would imbue the fight with a bit more legitimacy while still allowing for a Marquez upset to be monumental. But putting all of that aside, I must protest the kind of behavior evinced in this article: http://www.ringtv.com/blog/880/mayweathermarquez_mystery/ From Schaefer claiming that not revealing the weight would be a great marketing ploy to the two fighters both insisting that anything above 140 is a welterweight fight, this has to be one of the most inane promotions I have witnessed. The idea that the agreed upon weight won't leak out before the weigh-in (Rafael has already said it's 144) is ludicrous. Furthermore, I'm sick of listening to this jive about anything 140+ being welterweight. It's neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition to being a welterweight fight. What establishes that is the weight limit being 147 pounds. Henry Armstrong won the welterweight title from Barney Ross weighing 133 1/2 pounds; according to the GBP party line, that apparently wouldn't qualify. I wish they would just own up to what this is. I'll still watch.
