GBP Thursday Night Fights: Romero C. Duno vs. Juan Antonio Rodríguez Mozo RBR

Rodríguez upset Duno's buddy Mercito Gesta in March. Time for some Pinoy revenge, or will the Mexican southpaw make it two in a row?

 

This is for the vacant WBO NABO lightweight title, last held by none other than Mercito Gesta (captured June 2018, but allowed to lapse.. as he probably didn't feel like paying WBO dues to hang onto a minor trinket)

 

I always thought Gesta was a little overrated (even when undefeated) and while the "next Pacquiao" label gets tossed around too liberally, and probably doesn't apply even in Duno's case, he is a VERY legit prospect with big time pop. Also worth noting that Rodríguez's last important upset before Gesta was all the way back in 2014.

 

Round 1

Duno is floating the left jab, taking BIG home run swings with the right uppercut swooping in from outside. Rodríguez is pawing the right jab straight out from his armpit into Duno's guard and swerving rightward, making Duno lunge in past him and nearly face-plant as he overloads his shots and gets carried away with his legs' momentum. Duno starts to settle down and weaves his way around the Rodríguez jab, sliding his waist past the scooping underhanded left, and thumps him with an uppercut on the belt line. Wide looping slaps by Rodríguez, partially caught on the backs of Duno's gloves as he shells up at mid-range. Quick left hook lead by Duno, turning Rodríguez's cheek. Double jab charging in by Duno, lulling Rodríguez, setting up a body uppercut.

10-9 Duno, competitive.
