Now here's something worth looking forward to:

Vic Darchinyan, Daniel Geale fight night in works

by Nick Walshaw - The Daily Telegraph - September 6th 2011

AMERICAN promoter Gary Shaw wants Vic Darchinyan and Daniel Geale to revive Australian boxing together - with plans to have the nation's top two fighters headline a blockbuster Sydney card.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Shaw - regarded as the world's largest and most respected fight promoter - is planning a resurrection of what he calls "a fertile fight country that for too many years has been overlooked".

As a result, the heavyweight New Yorker has opened his chequebook this week and added three of the nation's most promising fighters to his stable - featherweight Joel Brunker, super featherweight Will Tomlinson and super middleweight Trent Broadhurst. Between them, the trio are undefeated in 45 fights.

Shaw said the possibility of Australia's top two fighters appearing on the same card would be appealing.

"Vic and Daniel, together I see them selling 20,000 tickets," he said.

"This isn't something that's going to happen in their next one or two fights, of course. But the secret to boxers being successful in Australia, for the sport to grow, we have to ensure they walk that fine line between appearing at home and taking on the biggest names overseas. Vic and Daniel are your country's best ... they're the present and future of the sport."

Having defended his IBO bantamweight title against South African Evans Mbamba on Saturday, Darchinyan is now after total supremacy in the bantamweight division before stepping up to super bantamweight and, possibly, featherweight. Talks are already under way for the gritty Australian to fight WBA world champion Anselmo Moreno, followed by a rematch with Abner Mares - who beat Darchinyan on the way to becoming IBF and WBC champion.

It should be classed as a night of respect with a card full of Australia's most respected boxers.
