THE one defining characteristic about Daniel Geale is that he truly lets his fists do the talking.
On the eve of the biggest fight of his career the 30-year-old, of Mt Annan, cites experience as the reason why he feels little pressure for his first IBF world title challenge.
It’s also maybe because there’s little expectation on Geale as the quietly spoken ex-Tasmanian isn’t one for big-noting himself.
Apart from the boxing community and media, there’s been little interest in Geale’s IBF middleweight title bout with German Sebastian Sylvester on May 7.

It’s disappointing because it’s a title steeped in history - the winner of the bout will be the 10th person to hold the belt and stand alongside such boxing luminaries as Marvin Haggler, Bernard Hopkins, Arthur Abraham and Roy Jones Jr.
Geale and his camp flew out of Sydney on Friday bound for Germany.
“It all starts then. I’ll have a hard week of training, then an easier week . . . ,” he told the Chronicle before he left.
Geale admitted this bout was the culmination of 20 years in the ring.
“It’s the biggest, it’s huge for us. It’s pretty much the fight I’ve been looking for my whole career,” he said.
“It’s a combination of my management doing a really good job and some really hard training for me.”
He said his preparation was not just confined to the ring, but also researching his opponent.
In Sylvester’s case, Geale said he was the type of boxer who didn’t look for a knockout but was prepared to sit back, walk around and wait for his opponent to make a mistake.
“Just over half his fights he’s gone the distance ... I have to be smart or else he’ll try to take my confidence way and break me down.”
Geale said his strength was in being prepared to adapt his plans.
“I have to be willing to adapt and prepare for anything. You never know what can happen in the ring; there could be a low blow, an accidental headbutt . . . and you need to adapt what you’re doing.

 

If Geale wins and cames back to Oz and gave Mundine a rematch, i'd have no doubt Geale wld stop Mandy.

 

Geale should not give mandy the time of day just like Mandy did to him on the rematch

 

Exactly.

 

Fat chance of that happening. It'd be an absolute money spinner and give Geale a chance to avenge the only loss on his ledger.

 

It probably will happen, although mundine is finished, you really think it would generate much money?? And it's a huge step backwards for geale, I think he be more interested in fighting offshore

 

It would generate plenty of coin, make no mistake. Mundine is on the slide, if not cooked but average Joe doesn't really care. They want to see Mundine get dusted and what better way than to have a rematch after a close initial bout and for a World Title. It'd do much bigger numbers than the original, if promoted correctly. Not that it really matters, but Anthony is also currently rated at #6 by the IBF at Middleweight. Coincidence?

 

I think there would be better opportunities out there for geale if he wins this, I hope he forgets mundine and looks foreward,

 

What better opportunites for a first up defence than a guy who he'll probably beat that will probably pay him the most out of any contender he's going to land? Boxing is a business first and foremost. Freezing out Mundine would be cutting off his nose to spite his face.

 

Could easily happen. The winner on May 7th is entitled to a voluntary defence straight after it. Mundine is ranked inside the top 14 of the IBF and pretty much what u said, if Geale beats Sylvester and wants to have a defence at home he won't stand to make more money against any other opponent than he will with Mundine. I think Geale beats Mundine comfortably in the rematch. He has improved a ton and will continue to do so.

 

I just think geale would go towards another belt.

 

Geales people are not stupid a first defense against Choc would generate so much $$$$$ more so if he defended his title three times overseas,its bound to happen..

 

Jesus just watched Sylvester's fights recently with Karmazin and Oral and ****ing hell his crowd are fair vocal, would be a great buzz to be at 1 of his fights for the atmosphere if nothing else. There were times when he was throwing out the jab and not even landing and they were still going mental. Literally from the 1st bell until the last in the 12th they were constantly cheering. One round non-stop chanting 'Hurrikan, Hurrikan ' . I think its probably due to the fact that he is a naturalized German because never seen a crowd in Germany that vociferous when Abraham, Klitschko or Stieglitz fight. Lets hope Geale doesn't freeze on fight night when confronted with that.

 

Geale will destroy Sylvester.

At one stage I wanted to see Geale VS Mandy II, but now I don't really care because Mandy is pretty well done.
It wouldn't achieve a lot except to increase his bank account. Avenging a loss to someone who is done is a bit redundant.

Geale should chase unification after Sylvester.
