83 is a hell of a nice run, though. Nothing "tragic" about his life or death. Well played, sir......

I saw him fight a lot, of course,

and he always put on an action show, and was certainly hard to beat.

Unlike most maulers, he had a plan B and could box and move quite well, which he did most effectively now and then.

He gave an excellent account of himself in that draw with Tiger. I think most of the ringside press gave him the nod.

Yes indeed, he had a "Plan B"...and her used it very effectively..and disproved all those who derided him as being "one dimensional".

It is hard to believe that so rugged a man as Gene Fullmer could die !
But "from dust to dust "...

I remember what my dad used to say about mortality,

"The young can die, and the old must."

Bull****. In their first fight he learned real quick Tiger would chew him up and spit him out so he ran and ran and ran. He picked up right where he left off in the second fight and didnt even try to win. He just tried to survive and hoped for one of the many gift decisions he benefitted from. He was a good fighter but his record would have several more losses without the homecooking shinanigans he and marv jensen pulled.

Damn. That's all the brothers passed on, then, right? There were three? Or just three who boxed?

    "ran and ran and ran"

He used his mobility to move in and out, and effectively built up an early lead. Tiger came on in the last two rounds.

I don't think there was any home cooking. Fullmer's fights were just hard to score.

Yes. All three. Gene Fullmer died on April 27, just hours after his brother, Jay Fullmer, is laid to rest. The third brother, Don Fullmer, died in 2012.

Never saw the fight, but I know Tiger was very disparaging about Tiger in a B I article shortly after it.

Saying, "why didn't Fullmer try to win back the title honestly?"

"**** Tiger and Gene Fullmer went 15 blood-drenched rounds last night as Tiger retained his world middleweight championship. Fullmer turned fancy Dan and, darting in and out to land a single blow at a time, piled up an early lead. But Tiger finally caught up in the final two rounds to earn the draw. The blood started flowing early in this one, and in the 3rd round, Fullmer was bleeding from his left eye. By the middle of the fight, the crimson flowed from his head, nose and ear. Tiger bled profusely from a cut near his left eye. They exchanged blows to the head and body up through the 13th, with neither man seriously hurt. Then Tiger came on strong. He rushed in with wild swings that caught the tiring Fullmer and thereby saved his crown." - United Press International
