This content is protected So as some of you are aware Gene Fullmer made use of a cross guard similar to the type of guard used by Norton, comeback Foreman etc. The difference between Fullmer and other fighters who used a cross guard is that Fullmer predominantly blocked upwards with his lead hand as opposed to blocking upwards with his rear hand. My question is, if using the lead hand upward block in this “system”, how do you defend against overhand rights? I’ve watched a couple of Fullmer’s fights and his opponents have made little use of this technique. Whilst the overhand does seem to be particularly effective against the rear hand upward block, I’m not so sure when the lead hand is the highest point of defense. Is it a credible defense to block overhead? It looks to me like Fullmer carries the block low to defend more against straights shots.
Elbow flip if at a right distance, otherwise head movement/duck. Gene was also the one more often bent at the waist, throwing overhands while dipping down.
When he gets that left elbow up, and tucks his head in the crook of his arm, all he is giving you as a target for a right hand, is the top of his head. When he comes forward like that, he is a billy goat with a battering ram- did you see in the video how many guys were throwing punches while pulling away?
