Insane. The pick of the bunch just causes him to have a wee step back and a think to himself. What he have in that chin?

Fernandez could really bang, too. Makes what Lausse did to Fullmer all the more impressive. The freakish Robinson KO aside, I've never seen Fullmer as affected by punches as against Lausse.

Funny you should say that, because I was kind of thinking how it, IMO, gave the edge to Lausse in the "who hit harder?" stakes between these two. Arguably the two hardest pure punchers in MW history. Arguably.

I remember getting that Lausse-Fullmer DVD from Raging()Bull a few years back and it was one he insisted I watch with a special eye, he knew I'd like it. When Lausse goes ape**** with the hook in (I think) round two, I thought he'd simply hurt his right hand and couldn't throw it. I questioned RB about it and he said, "No, he just liked to throw the hook."

Wow, did he. Lausse, for my money, was one of the very hardest hitters I've seen at the weight. I'd put him a bit above Fernandez really.

Seen Tiger-Fernandez, I take it? Tiger adjusts to his power well after letting him feel his oats for a time.

Tiger. More iron. I sometimes wonder if Fullmer isn't the definitive chin at the weight given his style though.

It could be said that Fullmer was older, stronger, and more accomplished at that time (Fernandez) then when he fought Lausse...but not to take anything away from Lausse as a brutal left hooker.

This is why i rate Fullmer higher than some do. I hesitate to pick some modern guys over him because of his proven awkwardly clever style and his toughness. That's right, he was awkwardly clever...check out his record and list of opponents. he had more on the ball than just being a crude slugger as many brand him.

Could be. For my money though, I still gotta go with Hamsho. His beard was just ridiculous, and he made it almost a point to take as many flush shots as he could, whereas Fullmer could actually move and box some and occasionally make you miss. Hamsho seemed almost insulted if you missed him.

I still need to find Tiger-Fullmer fights in their entirety......

Interesting how Fullmer uses his left to defend against the left hook of Fernandez.

Webb dropped him but it wasn't counted.

    It also had no effect.

A sustained beating was usually required to finish Fullmer. Nails.

It took more than just being a "crude slugger" to have so many 15 rounders vs man like SRR, Fernandez, Giardello and Tiger. Fullmer used a very personalized "boxing" technique against these men that was supplemented by his natural ruggedness and brute strength. He was very effective at bull rushing his opponents with that cross-arm defense he used and by keeping his chin tucked behind his left shoulder. He had a reverse gear when need be that took him out of harm's way when rattled, which didn't happen very often. Fullmer was just a rough, tough sonuvagun who didn't have to worry about getting a pretty face messed up.

Fullmer, I believe, would have decisioned LaMotta. He would have fought him the way he did Basilio. He wouldn't have stopped Jake of course, but he was, in his own way, cleverer than the Bronx Bull. A bout between those two would have been like a middleweight version of Bonavena-Chuvalo...a higher class version of course.

The way a very strong guy like Fullmer fought against Basilio showed what a physical beast Carmen had been in his prime too_One of the stronger Welters ever.
