Been trying to decide which one of hese two fighters i would rate as robinson's best win at middle set me thinkng about this fantasy fight, never seen it discussed here (might be wrong). The fight would be an absolute barnstormer, would be a definite fight of the year, i edge towards la motta on points, can't see either being stopped Thoughts?
Probably LaMotta. Larger, for starters, which would negate Fullmer's normal size advantage with him being such a tank of a MW.
Though both were 5 8" Lamotta was often heavier ,up to 170lbs, I doubt he was stronger than Fullmer, but I pick Jake ,I think he was the better fighter.
Lamotta too tight tough and beats Fulmer in the inside, also Jake had the faster hands JL UD 15 or late tko
At their best I would give Jake a clear edge. But if you were base it on their careers overall, there is no reason that Fullmer couldnt beat Jake and maybe even several times in a series. Lamotta's style of fighting often meant if he wasnt in the best shape, didnt have the right attitude or was at the stage of his career when he was struggling with making the limit, he could drop the ball..Sometimes against guys that werent considered superior to him. Bar some early losses, Gene really only lost in his prime to Robinson and had a close call with Giardello. I really dont see a stoppage here...neither were massive punchers and Fullmer was nearly as durable as Lamotta. Maybe pretty close to as durable in a p4p sense considering his was naturally the smaller man. Gene was also pretty skilled and a very good tactical fighter..He was comfortable on the backfoot and I dont think he would even try to outbrawl a guy like Lamotta for extended periods of time. Even if forced to I feel he could hold his own. Based on best wins I see Jake grinding it out if they were to fight once..Based on their careers I feel Gene could best Lamotta at least twice in a 5 fight series.
The guy was cagier and had better ring intelligence then people give him credit for. Watch his fights against Fernandez and Basilo..He counterpunched well in those fights and showed he was far from just a one-dimensional brawler. He would often untilise the jab in his fights to good effect..He did brawl a lot, got a bit wild and he often had poor footwork, when he threw massive haymakers he could go flying around the ring. But he was a smarter fighter then people make out. He used a different skill set to the what the status quo consider skillful but the man knew his craft.
I'll pick Jake, hard decision to make though, when it comes to sheer doggedness Fulmer is of the most effective, but Lamotta may be that bit more clever and collected. When all said and done its a hard one but im pushed and pick Lamotta
Right you are....Fullmer had that alternate sort of "plan b" style like he used against Basilio and Tiger when he got a draw. I think he would use it successfully against Jake for an awkward as hell decision.
Fullmer would win with that plan b style somewhat like Oscar Bonavena "boxed" against George Chuval, with the same result, a close decision.
