Gene Fullmer vs Bad Bennie Briscoe, both prime. The Fullmer that handed Sugar Ray Robinson a surprising defeat in January 1957 against a Briscoe that went 15 rounds with Carlos Monzon in November 1972, who wins it and why?
Awesome battle. Tbh though, for some reason I just cannot picture Briscoe winning. It is in no way cuz I like Fullmer more, I just can't see it. But, it could go either way.
Gene Fullmer was a rough tough mauling fighter who liked to swarm over his opponent. He used this tactic to nullify the speed of Sugar Ray Robinson in January 1957. Bennie Briscoe met Carlos Monzon twice, before Carlos became champion in 1967, they fought to a draw. Then in 1972, Carlos out boxed Briscoe to defend his title by unanimous decision. Bennie has an aggressive style, always pursuing his opponent. This fight turns into a rough and tumble brawl, close to a WWE wrestling event. Gene wins this one on points.
Bad Bennie didn't have the strength Gene had and he would have needed it to push Fullmer back and win the constant close fighting they would have had. Benny could hit but not like Robinson and not enough to hurt Gene badly, something else he would have needed to get the nod.
Fullmer should out-work him. He had a good, but very weird jab and a funny cross-guard. I think Fullmer's weakness was when he was pushed back. Turner, Lausse, Tiger, Fernandez and Basilio all had heaps of success whike Fullmer was on the back-foot. Whether they used leverage from a crouch, or were just stronger, they put used their strength to put Fullmer in uncomfortable positions. Say what you will about Bennie's record, the guy was a freak of nature when it came to strength. So I can see Bennie winning. I don't think it's particularly likely, but I can see it.
Gene wouldn't win because his ko power but because of his strength and Bennie's not being able to hurt him badly. Robinson landed many heavy punches on Gene and he just kept coming (The great ko punch aside).
