What Hopkins does exceptionally well is ring generalship. He is a master at dictating a fight and slowing it down molasses-like. Unfortunately, the guy in the other corner of this scenario couldn't care less about protocol or rules. He is just going to go out there and manhandle, which is what he does. And if you don't grab both those arms of his in a clinch you will be hit on the shoulder, on the top of the head, on the back of the head with that free hand. Unhesitantly, I go with Gene Fullmer over 15 rounds.

Hopkins that bit more skilled and savvy takes a hard fought decision.

Hopkins in a close and hideous affair. The type of fight that makes you wish you were blind

Since joining this forum, Ive learned that I underrate both of these guys. Yet I see Hopkins doing him, in a poor fight.

I think Fullmer getting sold a bit short so far. Scartissue offers a very reasonable breakdown thus far.

Hopkins didn't have the strength, the power or the work rate to keep Fullmer off of him. Putting on an act or feigning injury from Gene's rough house, mauling tactics would be no help at all Hopkins.....The Cyclone would be in his element and wear him down for a close decision.

Fullmer gives Hopkins all he can handle and gets rewarded with a draw .

Y'know, I never really thought of that before, but you guys are right. There were a number of times where he bailed out on a fight saying he couldn't continue for one reason or another. I agree, wrong fighter to be in with if you're a complainer. Because you're going to do a lot of complaining with Fullmer. Incidentally, some time during Fullmer's bout with Florentino Fernandez he sustained a broken arm. There was no complaining because no one was going to listen. He just fought his way through.

I agree because sometimes a great fighter who is so technically sound like Hopkins will be troubled more by A guy like Gene Fullmer. Someone awkward, goofy, strong as an OX. They don't do things by the textbook so textbook defense won't work.

interesting fight, Fulmer was a real rythym breaker and Hopkins could not punch like SRR, may be an ugly win for Gene

Put this in Utah and Gene would be favored.
