Fullmer apparently fought the last couple of rounds in this fight with a broken arm.He was a very, very tough man.

He may have not been the best or most skilled middleweight champ, or fighter for that matter, but Gene Fullmer was most impressive by reason of his extreme toughness and durability. He's the kind of guy you would want next to you in the trenches during war time. He wasn't strictly one dimensional however, as he proved both times against Carmine Basilio, Florentino Fernandez and the second time out against Dick Tiger. Against Fernandez, gutting it out with a broken elbow speaks volumes of the balls and the toughness that the man had. Many are the middleweight champs that he would have either run out of the ring, or at least given them the fight of their lives.
