Does Fullmer out muscle and maul Toney, or is Toney able to out-box him?

If, and it's a big if, the good Toney shows up, I think he takes it. Fullmer just eats too much leather and Toney loves a come forward fighter who is there to be hit.

It'd have to be the best version, though. On an off night, I could easily see Fullmer outworking a sluggish Toney.

I like Toney big. Anyone who affords him a lot of hitting opportunities up close will lose to him.

On the other hand, yeah, he proved he could lose to worse.

This is a strange one for me...first inclination is that Toney would tear him up badly, and at times I think he would. But Fullmer is strong and out right dirty at times...if he ffound himself outclassed which he would IMO...Fullmer is cagier than given credit for...I think he resorts to holding, wrestling, and hitting, making it a mauling type of affair...Still Toney by decision...maybe playing out similar to the Giardello fight.

I would pick Fullmer with a good degree of confidence. Toney had the skills to outbox almost anyone but he could be outhustled. I think Gene has some things going for him stylewise in this matchup.
He was tremendously strong for a middleweight. Strong like a bull. He had an exceptional chin so I don`t believe anything Toney lands is going to discourage him or even back him up. More importantly was his awkwardness. He was just a hard guy to time and a guy that was tough to get comfortable fighting.
James was the better all around boxer but I believe this is a terrible style match for him.
Fullmer by decision is a rough ugly fight.

The mauling type fight is James Toney's fight. That will play right into Toney's hands.

As for the James Toney being outhustled, I haven't seen that happen when he is in shape. Also I believe that he was not outhustled by Griffin but won both fights.

    Fairly comfortable decision for Toney

A high volume, awkward, ox strong fighter is exactly the type Toney doesn't do well against on paper for me.

I think Toney looks the superior boxer but probably throws too many rounds away and makes it a close contentious decision.

Not rating Barkley with Fullmer, but I think it could look a lot like that fight. Unless Toney really mails it in and shows up out of shape (quite possible) he should be able to win. JT was not exactly a weakling or a choirboy either.
