The Napoles who stepped up to challenge Monzon, gets in with the Fullmer who mauled Paret... 15 rounds.
Slippery as Mantequilla was he would be severely disadvantaged in this one. He's fighting too high above his natural weight and has a tendency to cut. Not good qualities to have against a big bruising basher like Gene. Fullmer would beat Napoles worse than Monzon did, IMHO.
Fullmer is too big and strong for Napoles he would either stop him late or get a wide decision just out fighting the smaller man.
Napoles is far too small to hang with someone as strong and rough as Fullmer at MW, who'd start to give him a beating around the mid-rounds after some good boxing early on from Mantequilla. I can't see a decision here, either a TKO or cuts stoppage in favor of Fullmer around the 7th.
suppsoe but i think he could outbox him it would be hard though and he would need to be top form but it hink he could
So you think he was more capable as a severely undersized MW (where he proved little other than that he could take a beating) than Sugar Ray Robinson? He'd be overwhelmed after the first few rounds. I'm as big a Napoles fan as they come, but he was no MW, and he doesn't stand a chance against a big, strong, physical MW like Fullmer. I don't know if he'd beat Basilio at WW come to think of it. Those types of fighters were real problematic for Napoles due to their strength and rough style of inside bruising. They made it difficult for him to control the pace or get out of the inevitable exchanges without taking some heavy leather and muscling. And as we all know, Napoles's skin didn't stand up as well to that kind of fight as his heart did.
Fullmer gave Benny "Kid" Paret a terrible beating. Napoles would get the same. Fullmer is underrated...I used to watch those Gillette fights back in the late 50's & early 60's.....the hey-day of the welters & middies. They beat the hell out of each other...just another day at the office.
Fulmer is very underrated, people look at the crudeness but the overriding factor when looking at any fighter is effectiveness. And you look at what he did, especially against smaller men. No chance i'd bet on Napoles personally. Though he would be one of the few smaller guys standing a chance imo.
your right there He would be hell for Napoles and im forgetting how little he is aswell. skill wise napoles shits all over him but physically he is bigger and stronger and in a fight would use that to rough up Napoles cut him up and batter him
fullmer was absolute poison for welters ,especially one as small as napoles.fullmer would wear napoles down and make it an ugly fight.
Yep. Fullmer's specialty was beating up blown-up welters. He knew how to make a weight/size advantage count better than anyone. On top of that, has Napoles ever beaten a highly rated middleweight?
I'm not a big fan of Fullmer's but he was way too strong for Napoles ,who was really a big Lightweight, its very probable that the beating Fullmer gave Paret largely contributed to his demise,Fullmer thought so.
