I don't see Gene get mentioned on here very often, in threads or match-ups. He tallied 3 points and the 29th position in the middle weight rankings done here about a year and a half ago.

What are your thoughts on Gene Fullmer???
Where do you rank him among the MW's???
How does he fare H2H (or who are the best you would favor him against???)
How would he do against the current MW division???

Quintessential 50's/60's tough guy...underrated fighter who had an awkward cleverness to augmment his natural toughness. One of the strongest fighters ever...and it was so ironic that he had to occupy the same era...and have to fight that arch-strong man Dick Tiger..what bad luck...like the bad luck of taking that unreal left hook from Robinson.

Overrated based on being protected out west whenever he fought. Several of his fights that were wins or draws could have easily been (or should have been) losses.

Yes, i think Fullmer was a bit of an overachiever...he wasn't really any more talented than someone like Steve Collins(That's not really a knock per se though) and as Klomp says had a relative hometown edge at times.

Good fighter who carved out a very notable career for himself

Was with Gene Fullmer at press conferences. Thought he should be in BELIEVE IT OR NOT. No living human could be massive as he was 'n be 160 pounds.

Specifically which wins or draws should have been losses for Fullmer in your opinion?

I'd like to see your scorecards for these fights if possible.

just found what i had read it was a quote from joey giardello

i remember gene fullmer was one of the dirtiest fighters around .when you played dirty back a little dirty with him he cried to the referee.

i dont think giardello was happy with the result

Yeah, I've seen pictures of him...like in the Basilio fights, and I think..."man...the guy is huge"(!) He looks so big and strong compared to most of his opponents...makes me marvel at Dick Tiger being able to manhandle him like he did.

Fullmer like most swarmers did not have a career that was conducive to longevity, and he had fought 58 fights over a 10 year carear prior to fighting Tiger. And Fullmer did fairly well in the 2nd of their 3 fights earning a draw (in a difficult to score fight), unfortunately I don't have a copy of the first fight to comment on with any serious insight. Tiger on the other hand was a young 22 and entering his prime years.

Do you think Tiger is better or that much better than Fullmer??? Fullmer already held wins over Greaves and Webb, both of whom held wins over Tiger. Was Tiger a bad style match-up for Fullmer, did he catch him at just the right time in their respective careers or was he just a little bit better????

How would a prime Fullmer stack up with Dick Tiger????

One taste of Lausse was enough for him.

Strong and slow, and a friggin hard-head.
    Built like a small nose-tackle.
Mostly an arm-puncher, with below-average power at best.

But, the guy was always in condition. And always gave it 100%.

    Kind of like Vito A.
