Yes Fullmer was tough no doubt, and Benny Paret fought 5 fights in 13 months leading up to the Griffith fight. But that was not unusual in those tougher days, and before those days. For example another MW Harry Greb fought 45 fights in one year inning them all...Paret did take a beating from the stronger Gene Fullmer which most likely led to his fatal bout against Griffith...
I've always had tons of respect and regard for Gene Fullmer....he was the very epitome of tough....yet revealed that he was more than just a one dimensional tough guy in bouts with Basilio, Fernandez and even vs Tiger in that draw that they fought. I think that he was a fine and accomplished champion with a world of heart...rising from the deck vs Lausse proved that, as did those pastings he received from Tiger....and only the magical Sugar man could do the trick of turning his lights off.
