I know the word advanced is overused on here but it's just a fact..Athletes over the years learn what to do an what not to do, and become better over the years because of past greats.. Tunney is one of the greatest fighters ever. Im not taking **** away from him.. Its just 2 totally different eras

    Piffle.

How can you have an advance in speed?

    Its neuromuscular.

Precisely what advances have there been in technique since Tunneys day?

Advances in training methos and nutritions increase athletes's speed, I would say. It certainly has been the case in sprinting etc. Why shouldn't it also hold true for boxing?

Tunney holds his hands low and leans back from punches, which is considered technical flaws according to moderna standars. Of course, it worked well enough for Ali, but I agree with Quickhands that Tunney is somewhat stiff when it comes to upperbody movement, which Ali wasn't.

Observation is also a big factor.. Many in the Tunney Era were doing things different than in previous eras.. In the Louis era they watched the Tunney era an perfected on it and so on.. Thats where Tunney gets credit for his innovations in the sport. He studied and tweeked with things.. And people improved off of tunney.. Gene was a true great.. If you put Gene from the Dempsey fights into the listed Patterson fights he would be shocked to see how much the game has changed.. Again noones discrediting Gene Tunney

    I think you are wrong.

If you were talking about Jim Corbett you might have a case but virtualy nothing new has been developed since Tunneys day.

The reality is that most of todays heavyweights are primitive compared to him.
