Gene Tunney: Is he a top 10 ATG heavyweight?

A tuff call.... Cuz in the skill dept., he is the goods.... BUT! I can still think of 10 past or present champs who I feel would "F" him up in a time machine....

He doesn't have the depth of resume at the weight. However, the argument can be made he does in a Pound for Pound sense, though I would probably put him inside the top 20.

 

Tunney is top-10 if you rate him from 1887 to 1960......... BUT!! When adding post-'60 heavy champs into the picture, well, no, Tunney dips down to top-20 at best..... However, skillwise, he was great for a dude 190 pounds...... Peace...

He arguably is.

He beat Greb, and he knocked out Gibbons, and I believe he genuinely offered to fight Wills - who if anything kind of ducked Tunney.

There are people who say Dempsey would deserve a significantly higher ranking if he'd done all the above.
Yet Tunney did all that and gets dismiss as doing "very little at heavyweight".

 

I'd rate him somewhere between eleventh and twentieth. He was good,but I'd vote a lot above him,based on achievement and resume at heavyweight.

 

I´ve got Tunney at 29, together with Bivins and H. Johnson.

 

Based on accomplishments, no. If Tunney stuck around and beat say Schemling, Sharkey and Bear, then top ten would be debatable.

I happen to think Tunney is under rated, and would be trouble for Louis, and Marciano.

 

Bivins and H. Johnson in an ATG top 30? You don't see that very often. You must like those small technician types who don't punch very hard.
