Q, and I have read that after their first fight in 1922 MSG ,when Tunney took a savage beating ,they generally split the next four fights by the consensus of boxing people of that time. And after their last bout on May, 27,1925, the past peak declining Greb with about 295 bouts under his belt, confided to Tunney' " Gene, I'm not going to fight you no more as you are getting too big". Harry Greb, great as he was, knew he was in decline, and he retired soon after his last bout with Tiger Flowers. We are talking about a middleweight ,past his peak, with close to 300 ring wars under his belt, blind in one eye, holding his own with a 12-15 pound HEAVIER ,prime Gene Tunney, who by then was growing into a full-strong heavyweight. For ANY 160 pounder to hold his own with one of boxings greatest light heavyweights, is a great feat unto itself...Cheers...
Fighting Greb 4 times...One helluva boxing education. Barring the punishment doesnt take something you couldn't get back, I'd imagine it'd be impossible to not learn quite a few things about boxing and yourself in those rounds. Wonder if Tunney could have beaten Dempsey without solving and surviving Greb?
