Gene Tunney v Jimmy Ellis?

Geez, that Ellis never did get a whole lot of optimal matchups. And here's another one that is hardly a piece of cake/easy victory kind of match.

I really like Gene to win a decision here. A comfortable decision but not an easy fight. 15 rounder for sure. Poor jimmy---lets put him in with the Bobicks or Neon Leon or Evangelista or some guys of that caliber instead.

 

I was rewatching the excellent colorized version of Dempsey Tunney 2 recently posted and it dawned on me that Tunney fought a lot like Mayweather .. lightning fast hands and feet, excellent defense , jab - right , jab - right ..

Tunney's heavyweight resume is thin, but for the best possible reasons.

He retired at his absolute peak, with the division seemingly at his mercy.

Whatever you think of that version of Jack Dempsey, he beat Jack Sharkey, who was clearly the only other candidate for being the top heavyweight of the day.

Sharkey lost to Dempsey, and Tunney dominated Dempsey twice.

I am not a betting man, but I would say that the title was Tunney's to lose for a couple of years.

He couldn't have been beaten, without significantly elevating his conqueror!

 

I agree. Dempsey was not what he was in 1919 or 1920 but he was still pretty badass .. if you watch their rematch he shows some very good defense, a lot of feinting, jabs to the body, far more than a one dimensional guy .. his limitation was his cluelessness about cutting off a ring, something he could not get away with on his 32 year old legs against a guy like Tunney who was lightning fast. Gene Tunney was for real.

 

Excellent posts here about both gus and especially Tunney, just about all of them I agree with, and I would think most anyone would pick Tunney by UD, I don't really see any TKO's or KO's for sure in this one, Tunney talented enough to use his speed, defense and Ring Generalship to win a UD with no issues, and yes Jimmy would win 3-6 rounds depending on how the scoring goes over 15 rounds.

Tunney was incredible. No normal human born of woman ever beat him. (Harry Greb was, according to some on this forum, not human. Or didn’t exist. Something like that anyway.)

So Ellis would stand no chance. He’d be outboxed for 15 rounds without Tunney breaking sweat, wind or a fingernail.

Of course I’m being flippant…slightly.

 

No I dont think Ellis would win a round. He might score a knockout in the 1st round though If he lines up that right hand.
