15 rounds. Modern rules. 20 foot ring.

How does this play out? Does Tunney have the savvy to avoid Jones' deadly potshots? Can Jones deal with Tunney's activity done in seamless form? Will it get rough? Will chins be checked or merely chess be played?

    Thoughts?

A think a prime Jones would give tunney more trouble than the shell of dempsey gave him, dempsey did put tunney on his @ss after all and although roy doesnt hit as hard as jack he would land flush on tunney alot more often. When ATGs face off there' always room for an upset but I don't see Roy losing to tunney. But come to thunk it I don' see anybody middleweight to light heavy stopping a prime Roy

Howdy Seamus, that's a very interesting match up, amigo.

A smarty pants could make a comment that Tunney wouldn't fight Roy due to Jones' complexion but I won't say any more in that area.

A smarty pants could also wonder whether Jones had access to certain types of "modern sports medicine " or not but I won't say any more about that either ;)

I do reckon Jones has a big advantage ín this dream fight due to the fact that Tunney's style would be a lot more familiar to Jones than vice versa. Roy is a one off.

Tunney is a naturally bigger man with both a height and reach advantage and he also has the advantage of being a proven fifteen round fighter unlike Jones jr.

Jones had a definite speed advantage with both hand and foot and I wonder if Gene's hands down method of fighting just might make him susceptible to a Jones counter bomb.

I will go with Roy by UD in a close fight but I wouldnt put money on it.

    Cheers.

A close fight with no knock down s occurring ,neither man really hurting the other. I'll go Tunney in a close , very close decision .But a entertaining fight.

Tunney by ko.naturally bigger,he was a legitimate lhw not a big mw. Tunney had pop enough to hurt dempsey so he has the power to knock chinny jones the **** out. Plus tunney had the speed enough to catch jones and was a very clever fighter.
I laugh when the people pick tunney against monsters like foreman, liston etc but against jones? Tunney is as good and the bigger man

Seamus I like Tunney. He's a very underrated guy in my book. Tunney a always took the time to study his opponents and drill in on what he perceived as there weaknesses. Jones was a reflex boxer who lacked fundamentals to me while Tunney was much more of a complete package. I got Tunney taking over about mid way. I think he may catch Jones and take him out late.

I voted for Tunney. Fifteen with a guy like Tunney - for a guy that has never been 15 - very, very difficult, really hard. I think Tunney would win late rounds and bag it up.

I'd pick Roy over 12 for what that's worth.

Tunney is much smarter than Roy Jones jr was. Fought the better competition too. He has speed that can compare with Jones, great distance management, and great defense. Tunney would pick Jones apart due to his serious lack of fundamentals. Let's not forget Tunney beat Greb multiple times who much superior to Jones, had great hand speed, worker from all angles, smart, tricky, 10x better chin. I find it really hard to visualize Tunney having a lot of trouble with Jones considering he handled someone like Greb.

    Tunney KO late.

Jones for me. Tunney would have no idea what to do when faced with Jones. Jones wasn't a status quo boxer, he was unorthodox and fast, blinding fast. By the time Tunney figured it out, it might be too late.

jones perhaps but the 15 round stipulation might put it in tunneys favour, since we have zero evidence on his ability in the old timer championship rounds.

I suspect that Tunney would fight much more aggressively than he did against Dempsey.

That was not a style that came naturally to him.

I think that his inclination, would be to try to negate Jones's speed by a sustained body attack, like he did against Greb.

Tunney would end up on the front foot, and Jones on the back foot.

Does Roy have to put him down for 15 seconds or just 10?

Interesting points about the 15 rounds. If it made it to the 13th, 14th and 15th, then Tunney might be able to do some damage with a late barrage. I'd still pick Jones though, Purely on an athletic basis here. I'd love to see what kind of adjustments a fighter with a ring I.Q as high as Tunney's would make in a rematch.
