Very hard to say, Tunney countered well up close with short ripping shots, and we know how Charles liked to jump in with shots. But Charles holds the speed edge for me, and t's hard to outbox him because of that. I have real difficulty picking but i lean towards Ezzard Charles banging out a decision. This fight could get rugged in my opinion. At light heavy of course.
Charles by MD : Charles' offensive arsenal takes the day as he has the speed and power to slow down Tunney late, taking the last few rounds after an even fight til then.
I'm not sure Tunney is not the equal of or faster than Charles. He got off his punches very quickly without needing much set to his footwork or looping them much. Very straight, quick shots. Ezzard worked angles better, was tough as nails and a very good infighters. This is a tough call. The best lightheavy version of both, I'll take Tunney 6 times out of 10.
I'm picking Charles because he's more proven of the two. I'm not sure if any boxer (in any weight class) ever recorded a record as flawless as 3-0 against a historic top5 of his own division.
I think Charles was a bit more well-rounded and had the better all-around offense, so I give him the edge with that.
Tunney would have gotten off first and faster, pumping in multiple jabs throughout. He had tremendous toughness and conditioning with a first rate chin, and the mobility to move well in any direction, defensively or offensively. Gene was able to match pace with Greb in a quintet of torrid wars, a pace which likely exceeds anything Ezz displayed on camera. Speed and volume carry the decision for Tunney.
charles just has the edge in speed for me and that there is little else to split them so i will say charles by sd but not at all confident
Tunney would get my vote. Not because I think he's a better fighter, just a better prepared one. He'd study Charles' style and come up with a plan to beat him.
Tunney, Like mentioned Above He Was smart and would Watch Film on Charles until He Saw a Weakness and would build off of that in the fight
This is one fantasy fight where I find it hard to see how anybody could make a prediction with and degree of confidence. Both fighters just have too many tools that could be employed in too many diferent ways.
