The Cincinnati Cobra is a billion times better than any fighter Gene Tunney has faced and is also a trillion times better than him. Tunney's best wins is a old and crude Jack Dempsey, and small man Harry Greb. Charles' best wins will make these two wins look below average. In terms of skill, Charles is a dimension above Tunney. So, Charles KO3.
This is ridiculous. Tunney had an exquisite career. He only lost to GOAT Harry Greb. He fought a calibre of opponent that Charles never faced. Stylewise, Tunney is all wrong for Charles. How are we comparing a Golden Age Heavyweight champion to a post-war fighters, who was really just a place holder between Louis and Marciano?
Yup, totally. I am the idiot who said Charles KO 3, and has Ezzard Charles as my avatar with "GOAT" written beneath it. That's totally me.
I do not mean to insult you by making the comment I did. Sorry about what I said. But Gibbons and Loughran are better matches for Charles.
I’d narrowly favour Gene, I think the difference in reach would be the difference make due to how well Tunney manages distance and how he uses his jab to set up those quick counters. I don’t think any great light heavyweight at a 3 inch reach disadvantage beats Tunney.
Give me the good black heavyweights in their primes that Tunney beat. His reputation is built without this acid test. Sure had he fought any he could have beaten some but a prime Charles would not be one of them. Tunney might be able to acquit himself well but I’m going with Charles in the end.
Ezzard Charles by the most narrow of decisions in a chest match that takes years of their lifes and changes them forever
Lightheavy Ezz had a twitch that Tunney never saw in such a physical package. Ezz was far too mobile and explosive to fall victim to Tunney's slower feet and arm punching. After 2 or 3 rounds we see the levels separating in this one with Ezz tagging Gene relentlessly, being first in position, first in punch, more dynamic. After 6 rounds Ezz goes for the kill and gets it in the 9th.
