Is there any footage of Fulton? I have never seen it. My guess is a prime Tunney is cagey enough to avoid the big punches from the big man and outbox him for a decision. Fulton's height and reach may give Tunney some issues though.
Tunney probably deserves the benefit of the doubt honestly, though if Fulton comes in with a strong enough tan, this forum will say he lacked the nerve to enter the ring.
Fulton would bring significant physical advantages to the table, so this could get interesting. The way to beat Fulton seems to be to stop him, not try to outbox him. As others have said, we should probably give Tunney the benefit of the doubt, but it is not a sure thing.
Tunney was not afraid to mix it up. I wish his reputation wasn’t so lopsidedly as a mover, dancing & circling away behind his jab. Most of his career wasn’t fought that way - though he may have tried this approach with a fighter Fulton’s size.
I agree with this. Assessing Tunney's style based on the Dempsey fights, is like assessing David Haye's style based solely on the Valuev fight. The Carpintier and Heeney fights are a much better guide to his typical MO.
Yes, throw in the Gibbons fight as well. Tunney was basically an offensive fighter, when he was up against somebody who wasn't a wrecking machine. Gibbons basically was a wrecking machine at LHW.
Fulton was tall, long, could jab and carried pop. He seemed to be a frontrunner with a shaky mandible, tho. I think Tunney would figure him out given his track record. There are levels to the game. Fulton had the opportunities to prove his class but generally didn't pass the test.
