I'd pick Tunney, for an upset. Johnson had more inside skills and rough tricks, but on the tape I've seen, Gene was actually more complete, and looked to me to be a touch faster. It'd be a great fight, tactically. If Jack could get a hold of Gene and rough him up inside, he would probably do well. But if Jack got stuck trying to play patty cake, I really think Gene outboxes him well. We know from the Greb results that Tunney could handle pressure. We don't know at all how Johnson would handle truly top shelf technical skill against a more evolved boxer-puncher around his size.
I also think the rules from Johnson's day, to Tunney's day have change a lot. Back in Johnson's day, it was clichfest and wrestling pretty much. That day was pretty much over in Tunney's day.
As a matter of styles Tunney could trouble Jack with his foot movement and quick hands. Gene was ahead of his times as a mover. Johnson stronger of the 2 but Tunney quick on his feet and speedy hands to take a close SD
Johnson all day. Tunney would move, trying to establish the jab but Johnson's handspeed would cancel it out. A boring, ugly fight, with Johnson winning almost every round, Tunney doing just enough to appear to be competitive, but really not. Sort of like this: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXnhz0xDaZs[/ame] youtube.com/eslubin
I see Johnson employing his glove blocking, counterpunching and inside game to its fullest in this one. UD.
Yeah I've heard about such quotes but I personally seriously doubt - have you ever seen the moving pictures of Piladelphia Jack against Tommy Burns - he was just awful - absolutely awful - he was literally running around the ring - not moving - it looked like something from a comedy film - I don't beleive for a minute that someone, who was so scared of Tommy Burns and so overpowered by Tommy Burns - just nowhere near Burns' level to the point where the fight was a laughing stock - I don't beleive for a second that he could've even coped with a fighter of Johnson's size strength and mastery - no way in the world my point was really that Johnson didn't like to fight above a certain pace so the only guys I can see giving him an unusually tough time would be fast aggressive guys with power - say of the Dempsey or Tyson mould PS dig the chick :admin
Think your selling Burns short here, Burns was a pretty powerful hitter for a guy his size. I have about 4 or so Burns fights, and the guy can wack. Only Jack Johnson relly tame Burns on the fight footage I seen.
Hey there Demps hows it going - yeah Gene was a toughie but on the flipside Gene never fought anyone remotely as good as a prime Johnson IMO (and I must stress that just MO) and to be honest I get a very strong impression that Johnson could probably have ended almost all of his filmed fights whenever he wanted - nobody ever fought with so much in reserve - I truely beleive that if Johnson's life hadn't of been under permanent threat the Burns fight would've been KO1, the Ketchel fight again would've been KO1, even Jeffries was carried a great distance, and again Flynn could've gone a lot sooner
Tunney face the Grebs of his day. Not sure how that includes with Johnson, but Tunney perhaps face the greatness fighter of all time, or at least the 2nd greatness of all time. And I rank Greb over Johnson. And as said before, the reason Johnson choose to end the fights, was mostly because who he was in with. Middleweights Tommy Burns and Ketchel, and Ketchel had no right to be fighting for the heavyweight title. And old shot wore out Jim Jeff. Tunney is other ball game.
Yeah and Burns did more than tame O'Brien - he made him a little sissy really - and then that very same Burns was completely tamed by Johnson - no way does O'brien even belong in the same ring as Johnson - it really is a huge stretch of the imagination for me to even beleive O'Brien boxed well with Johnson
Burns beat O Brien ,but Johnson played with Burns and did as he liked with him. "How badly had I underated his boxing skill, his tremendous strength, and unquestionable cunningness ! "Tommy Burns referring to his beating by Johnson.
As a heavyweight?? Wow that's some respect - I thought I was a huge Greb fan but I just see the elite heavyweights of all time as a step to far for even Harry - totally respect your view though - but I just see Big Jack as being able to man handle any middleweight - Stanley Ketchel for my money may have been one of the more vicious middleweights in history but he really didn't belong with Johnson - it was man against boy and I really do think that was a stick-on 1st round blast out by Johnson if a real fight
Pound for pound, just also recall that Greb did earn a title shot vs Dempsey, but like Wills, didnt get one. Greb at worse was the number 3 heavyweight of the 1920's about. Ketchel didnt even come close to what Greb did in the heavyweights.
