ugh. This would be a horrific fight I think. I think Johnson's superiority on the inside might tell in his favour even over a shorter fight.

Tough one to call. Johnson's style might be a problem for Tunney. Jack's leaning on his back foot might make it tough for him to catch a more mobile Gene but that same style means that Tunney will have to come to him if he wants to inflict any real damage and that could be a problem. Dempsey chased Tunney in their 2 fights which played into Tunney's hands. Johnson won't be chasing Tunney but looking to punish him on the inside when Gene attempts to close the gap (That's how I see it anyway). Sort of like the spider/fly scenario...or spider/wasp in this case.

Yeah, no way Johnson chases Gene. He'd get drawn in i think. You can see him against Heeney for the range he might end up fighting at.

I would pick Johnson in the most boring heavyweight title fight between two great fighters.

johnson may have been the better all round fighter with a better punch, but tunneys business and superior endurance wins it in 15 rounds maybe

Tunney is very under rated mostly because he quit the game too early. Outside of being a very quick boxer mover type, he was touch as nails. Tunney wasn't just a jab and cross type of fighter. He had a good body attack as well. See the Gibbons film. There is little doubt who looks better on film. Even Ali who was rather anti old timers had some good things to say about Tunney.

Johnson isn't active enough to win on points, and had problems with other speedy fighters ( Choynski and O'Brien ) who could box. Sure Johnson was good at clinching and grabbing smaller men, then uppercutting them. That won't factor in this fantasy fight because Tunney hardly stationary and very smart himself.

Styles matter. To beat Tunney one had to be aggressive, throw lots of punches and press the action as Greb did. Being a defensive minded counter puncher with less reach plays into Tunney's hands.

    Tunny UD.

Very much agree, he won't chase Tunney but use bursts every now and then to inflict damage and impose his will.

Tunney had the speed of hand Combo's and foot, Johnson shifty and cat like and cagey. Gene was more active and this may sway the judges over the clinch and swat style of JJ ....Tunney SD 15
