Tunney did not beat a "great" heavyweight in Dempsey at 1926.

Tunney was the best technically at least since Johnson in the hwt division. I see him winning against the majority of past hwt champion. Great boxer, smart, unbelievably well conditioned.

I am not sure that this is strictly true.

Neither do I, he would have found less dangerous opponents.

It's not true at all but it sounded nice at the time.

    Nonsense.
It was a unanimous decision. Referee and both judges had Layne winning.
Jack Dempsey had no vote in the decision.

He might be confusing it with Layne's fight with Charles?

My father watch the Walcott Layne bout live and in person. His comment ito me was that Layne roughhoused Layne all over the ring smothering his offense. In person he felt that it was a close bout with Layne edging it.
