I hate judging fighters from different eras for a variety of obvious reasons but...lying on my pillow @ 3:00 AM last nite, this one came to mind. Boring as hell or an exciting 'chess match'?...or something else?
I dont see any way for Young to win this fight. Although i am all most certain BoxedEars will disagree.
I'd rate Tunney as the favourite here, due to his harder punching, but Jimmy would run it close on the cards over twelve or fifteen rounds.
Tunney's positive classic boxing w/emphasis on measured offense vs Young's negative defensive style w/emphasis on sneaky counters. Not a fan favorite but a very good strategic, "chess match" as it's been said already.
I see what you mean. As skilful as the two combatants were,it would n't make for a very exciting bout.
Two guys who can take a punch, with nothing to worry about offensively anyway from each other..it's already cast it's spell on me, as I can't decide on who wins yet.
Gene tunney was a "deceptive" boxer, in that while a great classic boxer with great wheels, he was very aggressive in his actions. He was a sharper puncher than Jimmy Young, [witness his last fight ,when he destroyed a toughie,Tom Heeney] and would have outscored the more measured Jimmy Young....
I don't know but one thing is for sure, they would both mop the floor with Sonny Liston. UNDERRATED power....dropped Foreman and Dempsey. This content is protected
On a side note, i just came across this video of Young Sparring Frazier, i know its not very long [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXJ81hU_ygQ[/ame]
