I have a hard time picking against a prime Louis but then I remember Bob Pastor, Tommy Farr and Billy Conn. Tunney never had a bad fight at heavyweight, even in Dempsey II, he won almost every round except the KD round. I am interested in what you guys think.

Tunney is way to unproven at heavyweight to pick him over joe louis. This fight reminds me of matching michael spinx against mike tyson, the outcome too.

Louis by late TKO. Tunney gives Joe fits for much of the fight and is leading on the scorecards coming down the stretch, but then gets caught with a well placed, deadly combination with a few rounds to go. Louis closes the show thereafter. :good

Well I hate to be the advocated of picking one fight to judge a fighter, but the Joe Louis on that memorable day of 1938 vs max schmeling, filled with adrenaline and emotion.......it would be hard for many fighters throughout history to survive that onslaught. When Louis was at the very top of his game, he attacked and attacked early. When Old Jack finally caught tunney to send him into the ropes, tunney didnt cover up. he kept his hands low allowing jack to land 4 more punches to his head before he fell. When louis tags him, if tunney decides to keep his hands at his side he is going to get knocked out in ugly fashion. Of course the other result I could see is louis coming out and playing cat and mouse with tunney, trying to figure him out......Tunney would score lots with the jab but Joe would figure out his flaws catch up to him and finish him off by the 9th round. Louis would be stuffing that jab in tunney's face pretty bad too. Interesting At 6'2 207lb, louis would be the biggest and tallest fighter tunney ever fought.

But what if the Louis who fought Farr, Pastor or Conn I showed up? Tunney was certainly a better boxer than the first two and maybe better than the Conn. And one further, what if it were scheduled for 10 rounds?

If it's ten rounds I think Tunney might well take the decision.

I agree, If a shot Dempsey could catch him and put him down, a prime Louis could. Wouldn't be easy, though.

Suzie, Joe Louis gets bigger every time you mention him ,soon he will be bigger than Wlad ,for the record Louis was 6 1 1/2,,and his best weight was just over 200 lbs,he made 20 defences weighing less than 207,4 below 200 lbs ,only in his last 5 did he scale 207 or over.

Louis would be 1/2 an inch taller than Erminio Spalla big deal ,and can we put this myth to bed about Tunney beating up smaller men,his Heavyweight career comprises 8 fights in 7 of those he was the lighter man ,in theother ,against Gibbons he had a 2 1/2 pound advantage.Tunneys record gives these weights out of 35 available he was heavier than his opponent in 17 and lighter in 18.Its funny you dont make a big deal about this when championing your current sweetie Sonny Liston ,who nearly allways had substantial size and weight advantages over his foes. Its the same when you mention Marcianos win over Louis .Louis becomes a 6 2 216 lbs guy,not a 6 1 1/2 36 year old whose best weight was around 200.Rocky met very few big hard punching guys of any staturebut you dismiss that, strange.

Greb and Dempsy said Tuney hit hard.
And Tunney would have spotted the Louis jab that dropped after use, too.
Louis won the Championship at 195 pounds.

Joe Louis weighed 206-207lb in his 1942 title defenses vs buddy baer and abe simon at age 27. Many Louis supportes believe his peak fight was against buddy baer II where he weighed 207lb.

    Joe louis was 6'2, not 6'1 1/2

What 205lb + heavyweight did Tunney face?

Sonny Liston actually beat many big heavyweights including some world class big fighters. Did Tunney accomplish this?

Im simply stating facts. Joe Louis was 6'2 214lb when he took on marciano. This is undeniable. Pictures and Film shows Louis looking lean and muscular, he does not look soft. He filled out naturally as he got older. IF you think Louis looked fat, soft out of shape at 215lb provide your evidence

But at least he met and beat one Joe Louis. Who did Tunney meet that was big?

    Louis was 6 1 1/2
according to his auto biography ,and he weighed 206 1/4 against Buddy Baer in the second fight and 2071/2 against Simon second fight ,the reason was Baer was 13 lbs heavier than in their first fight and Louis didnt want to be bulled in close,,he had been knocked down ,through the ropes as you know,in their first fight Louis came in at 201 1/2.Look at pictures of Louis around the time of the first Conn fight ,then look at the Marciano fight.Marciano beat a guy called Joe Louis ,Terry Downes beat a guy calledRay Robinson, neither claimed it was The Brown Bomber or Sugar Ray.
