Good fight. 60-40 Roy imo. It's likely going to points and Roy's skills and speed might take it. That would be no disgrace for Gene who was superb in his day. If Tunney, who could box and fight, could increasingly make it a scrap over, say, the 15 rounds distance, it might have been his fight to win as well.
Tunney doesn't get nearly enough respect these days but RJJ at his absolute best was a virtuoso that I don't think Tunney would be able to time as well as he did a faded Dempsey. I think it would take Tunney one, two, maybe three losses before he found the answer to dealing with Roy for me. It's likely only the finest and sharpest of technicians and biggest of punchers at 175 lbs best the best RJJ. Roy's H2H credentials are much better than his record in my opinion.
What would happen if Roy's quickness advantage is not enough? Tunney wasn't slow at all and he's more skilled boxer with better durability and you won't find smarter fighters than him. I don't think it's that clear that Roy has h2h advantage. Also, despite not fighting black man, Tunney had much deeper resume than Roy.
Jones faced loads of fighters as fast as Tunney who were more skilled, see: Reggie Johnson, Toney, Hopkins And no Tunney doesn't have the better resume
Not sure if I agree, besides Tunney was bigger and rangier than Toney and Johnson. They were far different fighters than Tunney anyway. How can you say that? Tunney didn't have the best resume but he fought and beat better fighters than Roy.
