Sorry if this one has been done before, but been watching a lot of tunney footage on youtube, and wonder what the experts on here think on this fight, could gene keep out of trouble the whole fight and pick the rock of ?, or would rocky as he always seemed to do, walk through everything and finaly after his man is tired take him out with non stop pressure ?
Tunney wasn't always in full retreat mode a la Dempsey, but it's safe to say that would be his gameplan here. I'd have to pick prime Rock, keeping off him is ridiculous, he's a head to head monster imo. Marciano for me.
I agree with this! however if he can land the benifit of say a 10 rd fight like against Dempsey (although I believe that was at Dempsey's request???) it wouldn't surprise me if he could pull out a decision.
Tunney was a great boxer and very crafty. Marciano was tough and always had an answer for slick boxers. Plus not too many could go the distance with him eventually they got caught or tired or broke down. Tunney could out box him for over half the fight but my guess is Rocky eventually wins down the stretch.
I wouldn't lay my hard earned money on either guy. This wouldn't be anybody's walk in the park but I actually favor Tunney on here. Good mover who knows how to haul ass when he's hurt. I say Tunney by decision.
tunney has the style to beat the rock but rocky has the determination to eventually get to him, i am with the majority here and think this one could go either way.
It's a tough one to call. In the end I favor Marchegiano because he has more vowels in his name. I think Tunney's movement was not rythmic, but in the sense still predictable. I think he would figure him out easier than Jersey Joe... it's just Tunney is so much more mobile. Close decision in Rocky's favor.
Despite my admiration for Marciano's conditioning, heart and animal punching power I really believe that Tunney's reach advantage and boxing style would make him a a prohibitive favorite in this match up. I can see Gene keeping The Rock at distance and 'touching' him the entire fight. The X-Factors, of course, are Marciano's right hand and his patience so he'd always be probing and looking for his opportunity. With that said, I don't think Tunney would give him one and would win a tough decision.
well neither were stopped so its a full distance fight. tunny and rock had the same unbreakable steely determination. the planning that went into the dempsey fight was years in the making. the comitment gene showed was out of this world, he basiclty targeted dempsey and steadily chose opponents best suited to eventualy prepare him for dempsey. had marciano been his target instead of dempsey gene would bide his time and work on a plan a, b, c,... he would have evrything covered and would study flaws to exploit, you just cant dismiss a fully prepared tunney against anyone. Having said all that if gene steps out of a time machine not knowing enough about marciano he would lose worse than he ever did with greb. if gene has the years to study and plan for marciano though its 50-50. gene was a smart all rounder with equal mental grit as rocky. Its very close head to head.
I agree........ Based on Marciano getting by Charles two times in '54, I gotta assume he'd eventually walk down the slicker but also weaker Tunney in a 15 rounder.......... Say what you will about Buzzard Charles of 1954, but Ole Charles was well trained without an ounce of fat on him when he was beaten in two encounters with "The Rocker." NOW! If this is a 10 rounder.... I can see Tunney staying away long enough to get the nod over Marciano..... bbb:hat SR.BILLARDO
