Speed and talent the level of Jones was never witnessed by the likes of Tunney in that era. The old timer dick riders will say Tunney, but the reality is Jones would **** him up.
At 175. Jones' great speed is slightly diminished. Tunney being a very good technician. could prove to make this a very interesting bout.
By all accounts Greb was one of the fastest fighters ever. Tunney dealed with it pretty good. a good jab and good timing beats speed, Tunney had both. And a good punch. It would be a very good fight, even at the beginning but Tunney would have got his timing right around the midrounds and taking over the fight. Late round TKO for Gene.
By contempary accounts his style was described as 'amateurish', as for 'fastest ever', well judge for yourself [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO2dTnFl2Z0[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQIx3Thz9Fc[/ame]
I think Tunney would KO Jones. Tunney was a pretty good puncher to the head or body, tough as nails, and would have a height and reach advantage.
Old school or not, Tunney ko's Jones. Tunney was one of the best LHs ever. He was bigger and stronger than Jones. He was a very good technician, too.
Tunney didn't fight black guys and Jones didn't fight anyone with a pulse. It's a fantasy just to get these guys in the ring.
Tunney was only still standing at the end of their first fight because Greb lacked the single punch knockout power that could put him away. Tunney himself marveled after the fight how he was even still on his feet. Roy Jones had monstrous power to go along with his speed that was most likely superior to Greb's also. Tunney was also only able to improve upon his performance and finally handle Greb by shutting himself away within his own mind and obsessing over how he might best Greb. And even then it took advice from Benny Leonard to correct some of what he was intending to do to help him. He was not able to make the adjustments within the fight and then take over as you might insinuate. For the time he was in the ring during that first fate he was at Greb's mercy. Perhaps you can chalk this down to the early cut, and that RJJ would not have the benefit of a partially blinded Tunney, but we can only go on what happened and not conjecture that Tunney might have figured Greb out midway through had not he been handicapped by this. RJJ wins, IMO.
