Compared to the modern LHW's, absolutely. The guy known as Tunney from the footage I saw wouldn't be top 200 today as it stands in that video. I suppose he would train modern and break top 50 perhaps, seemed decently intelligent. And DMT, go down some toilet bowl cleaner my friend, it helps with boxing knowledge.
Tunney was a great fighter, and even if we compare him with the today boxing scene (almost 100 years later) he looks in tapes very good. It´s not fair to compare fighters from different eras, I think that´s crystal-clear.
Well, DMT feels as it stands, the Tunney from the tapes, beats Joe Calzaghe, which is absurdity. Maybe DMT ought to find his inner self and give a hug, because that's embarassing.
Look, we can´t say if the Tunney from his times would be able to beat a modern elite fighter of today like Calzaghe, but if we look logically at his record and at some tapes, he was a helluva fighter, he was able to beat the HW-champ like Dempsey, who was really still good at that point. He beat other great fighters like Carpentier or Greb, so I wouldn´t say he wouldn´t be able to beat a much smaller man in Calzaghe...
If we would look in 100 years a boxing fight between 2 good fighters, we would probably think the same about the likes of Calzaghe, Klitschko, Pacquiao, etc, that´s just normal...
Rather than running around claiming one of the all-time great light heavyweights, one of the select few who managed to win the heavyweight championship is "awful" and has "bad punching technique" please give me your expert analysis as to why this is the case. What is it specifically about his technique, other than the fact that the film is poor and that it's in black and white, that doesn't match up to the top 200 lightheavyweights of today? Tunney would pick Calzaghe to pieces, hes one of the best pure boxers in the history of the sweet science.
Probably, but it would then be ridiculous to suggest that those three fighters could live with the talent in 100 years. If boxing changes in the next 100 years as it has in the past 100, these three won't rank anywhere head to head, unless under their own rules.
Tunney would truly and utterly beat the crap out of Calzaghe, "horrible technique" my ass. Tunney was incredible and one of the best pure boxers ever
Horrid statement. Tunney was an excellent boxer. One of the best. Beautiful footwork, superb conditioning, fast hands, excellent work rate. If you don't like Tunney, then you probably don't like Ali either.
Is that a guy with a Joe Calzaghe avatar criticising Tunney's punch technique? Jeez. Tunney was actually a far more fluid fighter than many of his contemporaries, he would have been a fearsome opponent for his modern equivalents. He was a great tactician, battle hardened, quick handed and technically, I think sound.
