I have Gene Tunney's "how to" book on "BOXING & TRAINING" 1928 which is harder to find than "A Man Must Fight", & has more detail on Tunney's boxing TECHNIQUE! Anyone interested may PHONE me at 804-716-7038 (Virginia) as I don't check online very often.
Read it used to own it . It's a lousy read not informative at all. Cavanaughs book on Tunney is much better.
I enjoyed reading Gene Tunney's A Man Must Fight because he had some very strong opinions and put his personal stamp on the book, even if it may not have been 100% accurate and didn't include more information about his life. On the other hand, I didn't like Cavannagh's biography of Tunney because it didn't go into enough depth about his career or his life after retiring from boxing. - Chuck Johnston
I didnt like Cavanaugh's book either. He really glossed over (or totallly ignored) a lot of the negative stuff on Tunney and tried to paint him as the all american apple pie poster boy. That was the image that Tunney and his people tried hard to portray but that wasnt Tunney at all. Cavanaugh really dropped the ball. Its basically a hero worship book although not nearly as bad as A Flame of Pure fire by Roger Kahn which is basically a good old fashioned leg humping put to paper.
A Man Must Fight is good for the same reason many autobiographies are good , meaning you learn a lot about the author by what they don't include as much as for what they do .. that being said, it is almost impossible for me to find anything on Tunney that details the negative other than the criticism of him as a prig, ect .. I have never been able to read anything much about his reported later in life drinking problems, ect .. I'd like to know more for sure ...
His drinking has always interested me too. he used to show up to board meetings (he really had no duties as his job was just ceremonial at best) and just pass out drunk. this has always been strange to me because during his boxing career he showed enormius self control, diligence, and a spartan ethic. its odd to me that a guy like that could fall apart later like he did.
Not to play shrink too much but to me it might be the blowback of marrying so far up in class .. ultimate feelings of inadequacy or low self worth, ect .. It's been an incredible closed topic for sure .. if you look at photos or footage of I'm in later years he aged poorly, looks bloated and seems to only light up when reunited w Dempsey who seems pretty steady through the years being himself ..
Right about that,....Tunney sure didn't age well. He truly just let himself go physically in later years...and lost all the temperance that he once had.
