Mousasi fought overmatched opponents in Strikeforce. Babalu was past his sell by date. His only prime opponent was King Mo - whom he lost to and then went to a draw with Jardine with his sleepwalking style. I was not impressed by his performance. If it is indicative of his coming UFC tenure then he is good and truly ****ed. First real grappler he meets is going to throw him all over the ring.
This has been talked about a million times, but the Jardine fight is only a draw in the record books because of incompetent officiating. Mousasi won that fight with ease in reality. As for the Mo fight, he was controlled by one of the most decorated wrestlers in the division. That's about it. Mousasi is a more than competent grappler, and can hold his own on the mat. Not saying he can't be controlled again, but I don;t see many guys legitimately dominating him. Jones could, though, and that's all that really matters.
Rashad Evans is the best wrestler in the division. He's earned that. As for Bader: his takedown is awesome and very powerful but he has poor depth perception and trouble closing distance. Phil Davis, unfortunately, suffers from the same but is a lot faster so he gets away with a lot more. The real nightmare for Mousasi is Glover Texieira. If the gods were to design someone to destroy Mousasi, it's him. (Texieira is like a more violent and focused King Mo.) Holy ****, his double leg is insane and his cross counters on the feet can put any man away (unlike Maldonado whom we all know isn't human).
Are we giving Glover's takedowns that much kudos? Hell, I'm mightily impressed with his takedowns given his background but not a huge amount more than that. Obviously I'm mighty astounded with his offensive grappling in general. Man is a beast. Shame Te Huna is up next though. Wanted Te Huna Vs Manuwa and this way Te Huna is likely being sacrificed. He is an absolute monster though, more fluid and varied with his hands whereas Glover is one dimensional standing but times his right hand very well. Te Huna seems strong on the ground but he's fuxked there against Glover. Te Huna's best bet is to do a Julian and hope that the brief stagger Texeira ha when countered by Maldonado wasn't just a natural reaction to getting hit with a sweet left hook with a 4 oz glove coming in (and quickly shrugged off) and that he can catch Glover and put him away. I see Glover landing first (Te Huna more of a wide puncher, Glover's right should get off first) putting Te Huna on his back and realising he's more dangerous than Rampage getting am arm triangle or summat. Don't think Glover will let him bang bro'. What next for Manuwa then? Maldonado would be great. You want someone who'll let Jimi bang, but someone that'll have a better chance at lasting the duration. Or do we wanna' see Mousasi trying to keep Manuwa at range? I literally can't think of any 205ers outside the top ten. Is it really that shite at the moment?
I am giving his takedowns that much credit, and like you said, ESPECIALLY considering his background. But trust me, I'm not jumping on Dana White's hype machine, I'll probably take Te Huna over Teixeira (let's leave that no another day though), and I'm not really a fan of Glover (for one reason or another) but that takedown is something special when you compare it to his LHW contemporaries. Tier 1 Jon Jones, Rashad Evans Tier 2 Davis, Bader, Teixeira, maybe Rua? Why Teixiera with those All-American standouts? Teixeira's takedown is MADE for MMA unlike Davis' and Bader's who have yet to network striking into their skillet as well as Teixeira. (NOTE: This is coming from a guy who gets huge erections for NCAA wrestlers-turned-MMA fighters.) * Teixeira being a perfect 8 for 8 in takedowns in his 3 UFC fights only helps.
You'll take Te Huna>Glover? As a big Te Huna fan we'll get into that right now if you don't mind :think
I did say probably. :tong Just gut instinct though. As of right now I still don't know whom I'm going with. I think Te-Huna's hands are more well-rounded then Teixeira. If he pumps out that jab and get inside Teixiera's wide crosses, maybe? :think I think Teixeira is the wider puncher.
I think I'll give the counter punching advantage to Glover. But the combination punching advantage to Te-Huna, for what it's worth.
