Well Im 22 and always wanted to box. Finally doing something about it and am taking part in a white collar boxing event for charity on April 30th. I have no boxing experience other than watching it for years. Im in pretty good shape but I know the training is going to be intense and I want to be ready. Being trained by olympic champion 1992 Michael Carruth and two well respected strength and conditioning coaches. Basically Im just looking for little tips to help me get in shape and improve my boxing skills as we will only be training twice a week and I want to work on my own also. Thanks in advance
ya training in the glen and silversprings and i think the fight is in silversprings but im not 100% sure. Where you from?
Work on staying in your boxing stance as much as piossible. Move around the ring and try to stay balanced. Your feet are your first line of defense so make sure you're comfortable moving.
Thanks guys. Any type of exercise I should be doing now to prepare myself? Im doing road work, skipping and a little weights ( just dumbells )
Shadowbox in the ring. Get comfortable stepping in all directions while staying in your stance. Balance and stance is so crucial.
Get your cardio as good as it can be. Run sprints 2-4 days per week. That will help you more than trying to learn some real boxing skills in only 2 months. Keep your hands up.
scrap I havent met him yet. He was supposed to be at the interviews last week but his father was ill and unfortunately he passed away Saturday evening. The training starts Thursday week so should meet him then. Are you from Dublin?
It was in London we met Ernie Fossey used are gym, Ernie worked with Micheal. Sparred a lot with my lads, really nice guy.
This pretty much, you wont learn anything but the basics in 2 months time but if you are in superb condition you might win just by outlasting the other guy or being busier (as long as your opponant is of similar level). Also try and get as much sparring in as possible, sparring will help you improve ten times quicker than just hitting the bags or the pads.
Well it depends what level your cardio is at right now. Jog a lap or two to warm up and then you might start with 10x100m sprints with one minute rest in between. If that's too much go to 90 seconds rest in between or drop it down to 50m sprints. If that's too easy than do more sets of sprints or increase the distance to 150 or 200m.
