Alright, what's the dilly-o? It's been 844 days since he last competed professionally. 1,005 since he posted a W. Nothing lined up. Nothing even rumored to be in negotiations. As of a few months ago, however, per GGG himself - the man isn't retired from the sport of boxing. He is now 42 years old and even if a fight were announced this month, it likely wouldn't take place until spring putting him at nearly three years' worth of rust. And it wasn't as though he were particularly active leading up to Canelo III, either. That was his third bout in just shy of three years. Zero fights each in calendar years 2021 and 2023 and 2024. His name was linked with the likes Sergio Gabriel Martínez, Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, John Ryder, and Erislandy Lara in 2023 - but none of these mooted encounters materialized, and for all of last year? Radio silence. In fact, a dearth of his name being even mentioned - other than occasional idle speculation that Canelo may eventually ring him up for a Part IV should all of the Mexican superstar's big payday options in his expansive 3-4 weight range dry up. So, uh... hi? We rolling credits on the big drama show, or...? I don't understand why he doesn't either announce his official retirement or actively pursue an opportunity with a public call-out. If he does the former, he could be on the next IBHOF ballot for 2026. If he laces up, it restarts the countdown of three calendar years until eligibility.
I think GGG has ridden off into the sunset without a forwarding address. Probably for the best. As great as I think he is, he'd lost a lot of speed and that's a killer. I don't want to see him get messed up by some fast young'un.
GGG fans: would you rather see him come again rolling the dice to retire on a high note - or just hurry up and get inducted ASAP leaving his legacy intact as-is?
He's most likely retired at this point, or perhaps planning one more farewell fight before officially calling it quits. Either way he's no longer the force of nature he once was 10 years ago. Better to leave the sport with his health intact. Boxing will surely miss him though.
It would've been nice if he could've ended his career on a win but I think too much time as elapsed now so retirement seems like the best option. Ryder would've been a good farewell fight.
I thought he was spending his time advocating for amateur boxing to continue in the Olympics and had officially retired
Some fighters never announce retirement, they just stop signing up for fights. There are quite a few examples.
Just my two cents: The hardest battle for most fighters is admitting it's over. How many boxers have we seen who think they have "one more fight" in them? How many of those ended well? Charles Barkley wanted his final basketball game to be a double-double, then the goal changed to a double digit scoring game. After that proved too difficult he wanted to leave his last game with a single basket, rebound and assist. I'm glad GGG didn't go out like that. Constantly lowering the bar for a win. He fought his main rival one last time. I think GGG high note was retiring with three Canelo paydays. After GGG and Abel Sanchez parted ways over money I felt as though GGG knew he was quiet quitting the sport.
I'm sure by now we've all heard about the private competition from Mamie Van Doren at Maxie Rosenbloom's drinking establishment, between Jaynady Golovkin, Georgie Raft and Forrest Tucker.
From my perspective he’s never lost a fight professionally in convincing fashion. As it stands currently, he’s in the top 20 middleweights of all time. H2H, disregarding fight records and also taking into account fight records, taking into account modern training regimes/diets, based on the information available, one could make an argument he’s in the top 10 middleweights of all time. A prime Jermaine Taylor would probably outpoint him by a whisker. It’s kinda like that.
As far as I know, Golovkin is not officially retired but effectively so (I could see him coming back a good money fight which could either be an execution or a freak-show, or anything in-between). I would prefer he stays out of the ring, he is too old to be at the top level any more and I don't want to see him turning into a tough, dangerous but slow heavy bag.
