Your chronology is wrong therefore the entire argument is also incorrect.
Golovkin was only going to pick 168 fights if better fights were not available at 160.
In 2015 GGG was getting ready to fight Ginger. He didn't need Ward.

 

Ward up until Nov 2015 was WBA SMW Champion and still rated by Ring Magazine. . Golovkin would have been an unranked challenger for Wards title.
Both Wards PPVS with Kovalev and GGGs PPVs with Jacobs /Lemieux performed similar numbers. (All under 200K )

Both guys were similar draws but together would they would have been a huge draw.

At the time Ward had huge financial backing from Roc Nation. He was prepared to split all revenue with Golovkin evenly down the middle. Golovkin was set to make millions. Way more than the 2.5M he made for the Jacobs PPV.

He had an advantage as well with Ward being inactive and needing to cut a lot of weight. The imposed Catchweight or "no fight " was his way of killing the fight stone dead.
The man did not want to go near him. He would have taken a bad drubbing and he knew it , as did 99% of boxing fans not motivated by a clear type of hatred.

I don't hold it against him for not wanting to move up and take a loss. But the facts remain that he chased and pestered Carl Froch for years , but when Ward was presented to him it was turned down in 36 mins

So, just to confirm, Ward did not split the purse 50-50 with Kovalev.

What do you think would have happened if Golovkin told a guy like Mayweather to split the purse 50-50?

 

Facts: Ward could have had the fight through HBO even before 2015 if he really wanted it. He never took up the offer. He said no.

Ward wants to look like a rugged tough guy without having to actually face Golovkin. The last minute offer after Lemieux was signed was laughable. The fact that Ward wanted 168 for yeeeeaaarrrsss and then ran like a chicken when he finally got it was laughable too.

Ward suddenly wanted 50% of a purse that he was the junior partner in.

That's what this is about. Golovkin brings the money and diva Ward thinks he's entitled to a chunk of it. So the reasoning is simple: you want 50% of the purse, ok, but then we go halvsies on the weight as well. This is about money, believe it or not.

GGG is certainly comparable to Ward. Saying otherwise is ridiculous. He didn't quite achieve as much - although the gap is as monsterous as some would have you believe - but they're certainly comparable. GGG likely would've lost, and you do have to install Ward as the better fighter, but this isn't the difference between Roy Jones and Reggie Johnson. These are two very comparable fighters, and let's not act like Ward would win every round and take the **** out of GGG. It'd be a hard fight, no matter who won.

 

Stylistically bigger spoilers like Ward are bad for Golovkin.
