Gennady Golovkin Interview after the fight with Rubio

NO! You do not get it. In fact you missed it by a long shot.

 

He called one opponent "good boy" after having destroyed him and pizza faced. It is hilarious because he told it with the sweetest intentions, but he sounded like a psycho.

Also at the beginning he used to tell it quote often, but because apparently in his language there's a term that means "onest, clear" opponent and a failed traduction is "good boy".

 

"Good boy" is actually a translation of a Russian word, Молодец ("Molodyets") which is a compliment in Russian and was how he meant it when he said it about Rosado. He was basically telling Rosado he did a good job and he approved of him. Kind of like how we say "attaboy!" or "Good on you." But in English of course the literal translation sounds all wrong.

By now, though, Gennady gets the joke, so when he is calling Canelo a "good boy" he is actually saying it as a taunt, I believe.

'Good boy' is a literal translation of the Russian 'Molodyets' which you'll hear constantly when a fighter shows spirit or aggression if you listen to Russian boxing commentary.

A more idiomatically accurate translation would be something like 'good lad', 'game lad' or 'tough kid', but Golovkin (presumably in ignorance) used the literal translation intending to praise Gabe Rosados toughness and spirit.

And agreed on the Canelo thing. He was obviously using the term as kinda both a joke on his previous ignorance and as a kinda taunt.

There is a word for a "guy" in Russian which can sometimes be translated into English as a "boy". I bet GGG was doing translation in his head. He is lucky that Rosado is not black, otherwise Golovkin would become a racist.
