I am going to have to go back and look at this--but I believe it was 15 days to begin to negotiate OR it goes to purse bid--which would have given GGG the mandatory split--whatever that is--

What I see is deluded fanboys making excuses for Canello binning the belt and doing a runner.

Canello has tactically bided his time hoping to meet an older, less effective version of GGG. If you can't see that you need to open your eyes.

“Both boxers and their teams were notified through (a formal) letter that the 30-day free negotiations period was due to begin on Monday, May 9,” WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed to *******.com. “They will have 15 days to reach an agreement, in which case a purse bid hearing will be held on May 24.”

He didn't threaten to strip him of the title--he said it would go to purse bid.

They could have been negotiating all through the Khan camp and had that sewn up easy in 15 days.

He didn't like how he was being disrespected by the WBC. He was being dictated to and in particular given a 15 day timetable following the Khan bout. He was well aware that he was mandated to fight Triple G after Khan, but he wasn't being given a reasonable amount of time to make that fight happen. Apparently also he was dealing with a court case regarding his former promoter following the Khan fight and he was unable to proceed until that court case was taken care of. As far as the split and how specifically he was being exploited, I don't know the specifics but logic tells us that Canelo was a bigger draw and naturally would get majority of the split but the WBC appeared to be trying to influence the split as well to give Triple G a bigger piece of the pie than he otherwise would have.

It doesn't matter, GGG will likely beat him like a stepchild

They could have been at the table while Canelo was in camp for Khan--that's 8 weeks right there at least.
They knew he was next. Why not go ahead and start all the prelim negotiating?

I agree--Canelo at every point deserved the bigger split. No argument. But I also think at that time Oscar was quoted to saying that the fight was a 90/10 fight. Surely the Mandatory purse bid split would have been quite a bit more for GGG--

Do you have any evidence that WBC was trying to influence the split? Isnt the split for a purse bid fight in writing somewhere?

When was this format letter issued? Just prior to the Khan bout? It's a formal letter, then I don't see how it could have been part of the initial agreement when he signed to fight Khan for the title. It's clear that Sulaiman was going out of his way to put these timetables in place to force Canelo to the table within 15 days of the Khan bout. That in itself is absurd. Also that statement contradicts itself. First it says there's a 30-day free negotiations period then it says they will have only 15 days to reach and agreement. How is it a 30 day "free" negotiations period if they only have 15 days to reach an agreement? Purse bids are not aprt of a so-called "free" negotiation. Again, Canelo for whatever reason, possibly due to the court case, and possibly just wanting a few weeks off from boxing after the big win over Khan, or a combination of factors obviously felt disrespected in being pressured to come to the table in that timeframe. I don't see why Sulaiman didn't just give Canelo a reasonable amount of time to have so-called free negotiations with Triple G.

You ran away from supporting your lineal title argument quicker than Canello binned the belt in preference to fighting GGG.

LOL well the only people still bringing it up and complaining about it are Triple G fans. In a way it's silly to continue to harp on this, but I guess if you're a Triple G fan, you might as well throw as much crap at the wall as you can and see what sticks. The one thing that can't be denied is the fact that Triple G fans have stated in no uncertain terms that the reason why Canelo vacated the title was purely because Canelo was scared of fighting Triple G or something along those lines, and for months and months we've been hearing about how Canelo would never fight Triple G. But then here we are, less than a year later the fight is made, and yet they still cling to this story even though Canelo has done what they said he wouldn't do. Personally I'm just happy the fight got made.

Can you re-word this? I read this multiple times and do not understand what you're saying here.

That letter was sent out May 9th--the Khan fight was the 7th correct?
The same article I read referred to the interim agreement:
"The aforementioned condition was supposed to prompt immediate negotiations between Alvarez and Golovkin. Instead, the two sides reached a pact where they would take on an interim fight, with the agreement of immediately entering talks one business day following the conclusion of the latter bout."

So that matches when the formal letter went out.

    So here we are:
Canelo KNEW he had to fight GGG next.
It was agreed they would begin negotiating at least 1 business day after the Khan fight.
They COULD have been negotiating during the Khan camp, not sure if they did or not.
In Jan of 2016 Oscar is quoted to have said the fight was "90/10"
The fight would have been sent to purse bid, which I am 99% sure GGG would have gotten at least 25% as a mandatory challenger. Maybe more. I am not sure.

If Canelo felt disrespected, then maybe he needs to put on his big boy pants and learn that was in the deal--immediate negotiations, or the fight will be at purse bid. Purse bids happen all the time and are part of the sport.
